  • Peaceful farm site on the edge of the scenic Karoo
  • A 15-minute drive from Hopetown, and an hour from Kimberley
  • Gazella Game Reserve and Mokala National Park within 40 minutes’ drive
When peace-filled escapes are necessary, make immediate tracks for Witput Country Lodge, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the small town of Hopetown in Northern Cape. This is a top spot for lounging about, with swathes of grass and stands of trees giving shade to unwind in. Pony rides should entertain younger guests, while older animal fans might be happier taking a seat for the day and watching out for some of the birds that call this area home (there are plenty). Explores off site can start 25 minutes away at Gazella Game Reserve – a sanctuary where guests should be able to spot springbok, gemsbok, eland and kudu – or 40 minutes away at Mokala National Park, where there’s rock art to view, hikes to partake in, scenic spots for picnic stops and some fishing possibilities too. No need to go that far for fishing opportunities though – the Orange river passes around 15 minutes from the site, so cast a line there instead. Once hunger kicks in, return to site to clean up with a hot shower or bath, then throw the spoils on one of the private braai areas (wood can be bought in the farm shop). Not lucky enough to catch something? There’s a shared fridge-freezer too, so supplies brought from elsewhere won’t spoil.

Local attractions

The site is on the Anglo Boer War Route, in a densely-packed region of historical sites. If there's only time for one round here, make it the Magersfontein War Museum, just under an hour’s drive away, where guests can partake in guided tours with local military historians, learning all about one of the war's bloodiest battles. If blood and guts don’t appeal, drive past Magersfontein and on to Kimberley (an hour and 10 minutes), the capital of Northern Cape. As well as art galleries, gardens and museums, it’s got one major must-see: the Big Hole, an open-pit and underground mine that yielded more than 2,700 kilograms of diamonds in its day. It’s also one of the largest hand-dug excavations in the world, and is an oh-so-impressive sight. City days not done with? It’s a little under two and a half hours to Bloemfontein, the capital city of Free State province, where there are botanical gardens to explore, museums dealing with everything from the Anglo Boer War to literature, a planetarium, and a zoo. Though anyone who fancies burning a hole in that credit card might prefer to spend their time exploring the shops… Closer to home base, opt for more peaceful days with trips to see the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre (an hour and 10 minutes) or to play a round at Magersfontein Memorial Golf Estate (40 minutes).
