Looking for a quiet break in the bush accompanied by a spot of fishing on the Komati River? You’re in the right place at Hippo Farms Camping, 10 minutes’ drive from Komatipoort in Mpumalanga province. And the adventures don’t end there, as the site is also near the Crocodile Bridge Gate into Kruger National Park, as well as being close to the Eswatini border for multi-country jaunts.
Pitches are all fully serviced and overlook the river; there are also modern shower facilities, a barbecue area, picnic tables with river views and a covered lapa (communal hut with a thatch roof) with a bar counter and dining table inside.
There’s a private bay for boat moorings, and a boat ramp for guest use… but now back to more about that fishing. The Komati is home to barbel, mudfish, tilapia and carp, making it a great river for all types of angling enthusiasts, and Hippo Farms Camping is also one of the few places in South Africa where you can catch highly prized tigerfish.

Local attractions
As well as fishing, activities that can be arranged on site include sunrise, brunch and sunset cruises down the Komati River, and birdwatching along the river banks. You can join stargazing sessions on clear nights for spectacular celestial displays, and there are often barbecues held overlooking the river.
Entry into the world-renowned Kruger National Park is from the Crocodile Bridge Gate (25 minutes’ drive), so you’re well placed for guided wildlife safaris with the chance to see giraffes, elephants, zebras and big cats thriving in their protected environment. You can also drive across the border to the Mbuluzi Game Reserve (an hour and a half) in Eswatini for self-guided hikes or cycle rides through forest and grassland, hopefully spotting giraffes and antelope along the way.
For more sedate pursuits, there’s a prestigious nine-hole golf course at Kambaku (15 minutes) on the outskirts of Komatipoort (10 minutes), which has a scattering of shops as well as restaurants serving regional dishes.
