- Glamping site five minutes' drive from Underberg
- Close to day trips through the Sani Pass to Lesotho
- Well-equipped kitchen plus braai area and firepit with firewood
Keep it simple, travel light – that’s the idea at Nguni Moon Tepee Camp, a glamping site on the banks of the Mzimkhulu river a kilometre from the little town of Underberg.
Pretty much everything you need for a comfy stay has been laid on here: there are proper beds with bedding and towels ready and waiting, and there’s a well-equipped kitchen (with fridge, gas stove, oven, microwave and plenty of crockery and cutlery) and braai area for cooking up feasts. The kindly folks on site have even thrown in a pile of firewood for sociable evenings gathered around the firepit.
All of which leaves you to bring along just your personal bits and bobs and a selection of whatever you might fancy for eats and drinks (and even that’s fairly easily acquired by making a brief detour to the town’s supermarket, farm shop and cheese factory).
With life’s essentials taken care of, you’ll be left with plenty of time to lap up the area’s many attractions: take a swim in the river, saddle up for a horse ride through the mountains or head to Coleford Nature Reserve for hiking, fishing and wildlife spotting. Underberg’s also an excellent jumping off point for trips through the scenic high-altitude Sani Pass to Lesotho, so maybe worth packing a passport if you’re up for seeing what the view’s like from 9,400 feet above sea level.

Local attractions
There's plenty to keep you busy in this corner of the Southern Drakensberg mountains: a short hike from the site takes you to a super swimming spot, and there are horseback tours to be had 15 minutes’ drive away.
You can’t fish in the river by the site so if you fancy casting a rod into the water you’ll need to head to Coleford Nature Reserve, a 40-minute drive away, where there are excellent stocks of rainbow trout and other native species to hunt for. Non-fishing folks are advised to take a trip here too, for sightings of the wildebeest, duiker and other animals that roam the area.
Intrepid wanderers can add another passport stamp to their collection on a day trip to Lesotho with a local tour company, taking in some superb Sani Pass views and lunch at the highest pub in Africa en route. It’s possible to drive independently too if you have a four wheel drive but given the road’s notorious steep and bumpy nature it’s perhaps best left to the expert local drivers.
