- Rural site on a 3,000-hectare nature reserve a half-hour from Richmond
- 11km of river frontage for fishing, swimming and canoeing
- Trail maps available for hikes, mountain biking and game drives
A whopping 3,000 hectares of nature reserve – that’s a whole lot of space around Highover Wildlife Sanctuary, on the scenic Hele Hele (Hella Hella) route half an hour’s drive west of Richmond.
The KwaZulu Natal estate’s stunning scenery and abundant wildlife have led to it being awarded Natural Heritage Status, and make it an excellent spot for a rural break. Hiking trails run through the forests and plains, taking in waterfalls and mountain views as they go. Running through the reserve is the Mkomazi River, with about 11 kilometres of river frontage available for guests who’d like to take a dip or who’ve brought fishing kit along (the KwaZulu Natal Yellowfish is among the spoils in these waters).
As the name suggests, guests should come to Highover prepped for animal encounters: more than 240 bird species have been spotted here, and impala, ostrich, bushbuck and the like casually amble around the site. If you’d like to go off in search of more, staff will provide you with details of game drive routes or maps of mountain bike/quad bike/four wheel drive trails. Being well away from urban lights, the after-dark starry skies are frequently spectacular too.
To keep the place non-intrusive, the facilities here have been kept on the simple side: guests have access to a bathroom block with wood-fired hot water, and braai areas for alfresco cookouts.
