Adventuring in Africa? Factor in a stop at Futululu Caravan Park, a safe and secure site in an outlying section of the protected iSimangaliso Wetland Park and bordering the tall trees of coastal Futululu Forest. The Umfolozi Hluhluwe Game Reserve is about 45 minutes' drive away. Make your way to the outdoor bar for drinks after a cooling dip in the pool or a day out wildlife spotting on a park-organised boat trip of the region. The lake and estuary areas of the reserve are habitats for creatures like hippos, crocodiles and flamingos, while elephants, giraffes and leopards have their habitats in the nearby grasslands and forests of the Western Shores and Charters Creek areas. When you’re not out on a creature-spotting tour, hotfoot it on one of the two hiking trails at the caravan park towards a space popular for birdwatching in a serene setting. The shaded lawn among the lush gardens is an inviting space for spending idle afternoons afterwards. Feeling peckish after volleyball on site or golf, tennis and squash at the Monzi Club five minutes’ drive away? Eco-friendly Futululu Caravan Park is attached to an Environmental Centre with modern kitchen facilities for cooking and outdoor areas where guests can indulge in that most South African tradition: braai. The resort also has a small shop and provisions St Lucia is 20 minutes’ drive away for picking up provisions for the barbecue.

Local attractions

Weeks and weeks’ worth of activities are in this action-packed area, from snorkelling in the clear bay at Cape Vidal 20 minutes’ drive away to meets and greets with the reptiles at Crocodile Centre St Lucia (25 minutes). For more wild swimming, head to Mission Rocks 40 minutes’ drive away and drench yourself in the rockpools or trek to pretty Perriers Bay; you could also ask on site about how to organise whale-watching tours (June to November), beach and bush horse riding trips including overnight stays in the wilderness and deep-sea fishing for panfish and marlin off the KwaZulu-Natal coast. To learn about local culture as well as immerse yourself in the lush environment, Dumazulu (45 minutes by car) is a traditional Zulu village for educational tours of a rural community. And last but definitely not least? The Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park game reserve is 50 minutes away for perhaps your main reason for visiting South Africa: to see the Big Five.
