It's free, quick and easy!
- Peaceful family site 20 minutes’ walk from the beach
- Surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving within 15 minutes’ drive
- An hour and a half’s drive from Durban city centre
In desperate need of sun, sand and surf? Flow on over to Margate Caravan Park, a family-friendly site in the seaside resort town of Margate, on the southern coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
Margate is a prime spot for a beachside getaway full of watersports and sandy lounging. Four beaches are within an easy drive – Margate, Ramsgate, Uvongo and Shelly – where you can stroll along the coast, go for a dip and sprawl out on the sand or, if you’re feeling active, try snorkelling, scuba diving or surfing, all within 15 minutes’ drive of the site.
If you fancy a day off from the beach, you won’t feel let down by sticking around the site: there’s a games room, a jungle gym to keep the kids occupied, miniature golf for the whole family, full DSTV packages for anyone who doesn’t want to miss out on sports, and a swimming pool to cool down in after all that activity (there’s a kids’ pool too for paddling around in).
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you won’t have to go far: every pitch comes with its own braai, so stock up on goodies at one of the local supermarkets (Hibiscus Mall is less than 10 minutes’ walk away) and get to grilling. Prefer to let someone else do the hard work? There are plenty of restaurants to try within five minutes' drive.

Local attractions
If you’re hoping for a sedate break from real life, there’s loads to do in the area around Margate Caravan Park: start things off with a soothing round of golf at Southbroom Golf Club, 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to Margate Pier (five minutes) for a spot of fishing.
Getting back to nature is a cinch in KwaZulu-Natal. The trails through Mbumbazi Nature Reserve are 25 minutes from the site, and the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve – a top spot for trails, ziplining, abseiling and whitewater rafting, and home to the Wild Gorge Swing (the highest gorge swing in the world) – is less than an hour away.
You can also get up close (but not too close) with some of nature’s predators at the Riverbend Crocodile Farm and Pure Venom Reptile Park, both within 15 minutes of Margate Caravan Park, or have a more gentle experience at Butterfly Valley butterfly farm.
For those craving that city life, Durban is an hour and a half away – head here for uShaka Marine World theme park, botanic gardens, Phezulu Safari Park and Phansi Museum, and to get your heart back in your throat by taking the plunge at Big Rush.
