- Stunningly scenic site on a private game reserve
- Less than an hour from diving, whale watching and sandy beaches
- Game drives, river boat cruises, guided hikes and fishing on site
Stunning river views, lush greenery and plenty of wildlife milling around waiting to be spotted? The family-friendly African Safari Lodge, 25 minutes’ drive from the Eastern Cape city of Grahamstown, sounds pretty perfect – and that’s before you start listing everything else you can do there.
This site is part of a private game reserve atop Settlers Dam and there are loads of ways to make the most of that, with game drives and river cruises to sign up for, viewing porches to spy zebra, buffalo and antelope from, guided hikes to follow, hours of canoeing, kayaking and fishing on the river, and clay pigeon and target shooting to try out.
Lucky day with your rod on the river? There are braai spots dotted around the site for grilling that catch – or there’s a chef on site for anyone whose stories are all about the one that got away, and for those who opt for a catered stay.
For a change of scenery, try local eats with a jaunt into Grahamstown, then stick around the city for afternoons poking around museums, wandering around botanical gardens and (of course) shopping, or to start along the Mbodla Eco-Heritage Route and learn more about Xhosa culture.

Local attractions
The site's in a top location for anyone interested in nature. It's a 15-minute drive to Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, where game drives, birdwatching, canoeing, bass fishing, sailing and hiking should entertain, and baboons, elands, kudus and African buffalo are all to be spotted. When more dramatic encounters are sought, an hour and 10 minutes’ driving will bring guests to Addo Elephant National Park and its Big Five safaris.
Leisurely days lounging by the sea are a cinch hereabouts too – the beaches and Bushman’s River Canoe Trail of Kenton-on-Sea are within 45 minutes, and it's about an hour to Port Alfred for diving and plenty more sandy stretches.
A combination of seaside and city days can be had in Port Elizabeth, roughly an hour and a half away, where beaches, whale and dolphin watching, coastal boat tours and trips to the St Croix penguin colony are all balanced nicely with museums, galleries and gardens. For a less traditional urban experience, travel as far as Bathurst (an hour and 10 minutes) to visit the world’s largest pineapple and the pineapple museum, and to take part in pineapple tours and tastings.
Hols not complete without swinging a club about? Wannabe Tiger Woods can be on the links on the far side of Grahamstown within 40 minutes, strolling along 18 scenic fairways, attempting holes-in-one, and rewarding well-played rounds with a pitstop in the club’s restaurant.
