Waking up to a backdrop of spectacular Slovenian Littoral mountains isn’t something you’ll easily forget. Far removed from city life, Kmetija Drole is a peaceful campsite sits on a hilltop farm in the village of Ravne pri Cerknem in the region of Goriška and is overlooked by a whitewashed church with an ornate bell tower. Once you’re settled into the simple grass pitches (all with electric hook-ups) at your rural base, it’s time to decide what to do. Foodie? Sample tasty Slovenian cuisine at restaurants in Cerkno, 10 minutes’ drive away; choose menus where you spot traditional local specialities like žlikrofi dumplings or jota bean soup served with potica nutty bread rolls. If you’re of a rather more active bent, go hiking at Smučarski Center Cerkno (45 minutes) for stunning views of the surrounding mountains, or follow nature trails through the forests, scenic valleys and pristine rivers of mountainous Goriška. Alternatively, if you like outdoor activities with an adrenaline concept, you could try mountain biking down steep slopes, horse-riding through woodlands, whitewater rafting on the Cerknica River or paragliding over the rugged foothills.

Local attractions

If you’re unsure what holiday activities to do first, touching base with some local history will absolutely get things rolling. Cerkno Museum (10 minutes’ drive) is a small museum with traditional costumes and masks from the town's former years. For larger historical sites, Idrija (35 minutes) is a pretty little town on top of a UNESCO-listed mercury mine with a miners’ trail for interested folk to follow and a historical miners’ theatre building in town. Finish off your historical tours by dropping in on Divje Babe (35 minutes), a prehistoric settlement where archaeologists found a flute made by a Neanderthal. If walking around historic sites isn’t quite adventurous enough for you, Slapovi pod Roglco (20 minutes) has waterfall walks. There’s also stunning lakeside hiking (or boating) to get into at Ladja Lucija (40 minutes). Even more adventurous sorts can sign themselves up for the white waters at Maya Outdoor Center (45 minutes), which runs whitewater rafting, or let the season dictate whether they get stuck into the skiing or summer sports at Smučarski Center Cerkno (45 minutes).

Liked: Really friendly and helpful reception from the owner. This is a unique camping experience, very rural and unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before. It’s very basic with 3/4 spaces situated underneath a barn on a working farm. Currently there is no shower (however I believe this will be added soon) but there are toilets with a sink so you can have a good wash. A lovely decked area to eat your breakfast/dinner on which looks out over the mountains. It’s really a great chance to experience a small glimpse at Slovenian village life. But supplies before you arrive, there is a handy Spar in the village of Cerkno at the bottom of the mountains.

Disliked: The drive up there is quite steep and winding, but it’s worth the treck. The church bells will wake you up at 6am, kind of cool though if you just accept it, and super helpful if you need to get up early to go exploring.
