Glamping with a conscience? What a lovely idea. And it’s the inspiration behind Naturally Cool Glamping, an Algarve glampsite where the owners are particularly keen to preserve their little corner of the Portuguese countryside.
The safari tents at this site 10 minutes' drive from São Bartolomeu de Messines are part of an eco-friendly property that’s also vegan and non-smoking. It’s all immensely peaceful too, with plenty of shaded outdoor space for relaxing during the day, and areas where you can admire the sunset or gaze up at the stars later on (the skies are very dark around here, so you could be in for some spectacular displays…)
The tents have been comfortably kitted out with proper beds (bed linen provided), a kitchen corner and an ensuite bathroom. Dining tables are both inside and outside, so you’ll have a choice of where to eat the breakfast that’s included with your stay. You’ll also have a barbecue for cooking your own dinner – but there’s also the option of requesting a vegan evening meal if you’d rather.
Games and books are provided for a bit of entertainment, and there’s also wifi to help you plan adventures and keep in touch. The plunge pool is a welcome place to cool off in the hot summer months, and it’s open throughout the season so you can take a dip whenever you fancy it. When you’re not engrossed with any of these things, you can be out taking in the local landscapes on a hike, visiting historic towns or heading down to the coast (half an hour’s drive away) to hit the beach.

Local attractions
There are lots of gorgeous landscapes to explore around this area – and lots of ways to take them in, including hikes in the Monchique mountains (half an hour’s drive) and horse riding from a local stables (15 minutes). Ask the folk on site to point you towards suitable locations if you fancy getting out for a walk – or head to Donkey Tours (25 minutes), where you can go out for a stroll with a four-legged pal.
The local towns are worth a visit too – especially if you set off for Silves (20 minutes) to see the huge castle and other Moorish architecture, or aim for the Old Town in Albufeira (half an hour). Albufeira, of course, also has a stretch of beach and all sorts of activities including watersports and boat trips.
Elsewhere along the coast are some stunning beaches including Praia da Falésia (40 minutes) and the hidden Praia da Coelha (35 minutes), accessed through bamboo and olive groves. If the kids want some pool action, a good option is Aqualand Algarve (half an hour).
