- In Peneda-Gerês National Park, 1.5km from Vila do Gerês spa town
- Canoeing, waterskiing and windsurfing at Albufeira de Caniçada
- Bar and playground on site; surrounded by spectacular woodland
Wow. The lands around this farmstead site are utterly fab – and rather exclusive, for the surrounding Peneda-Gerês National Park is Portugal’s sole national park and listed by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. Lots of lagoons and natural pools are around the area to plunge into after hiking the plentiful local trails, or you could dive into watersports at nearby Albufeira da Caniçada.
Settled between the nearby spa town of Vila do Gerês and Albufeira de Caniçada's huge and scenic reservoir, Vale Dos Moinhos is in a peaceful spot among dense woodlands and hills, crossed by the peaceful waters of the Cávado river. Canoeing, waterskiing, windsurfing and sightseeing trips by boat are all close by.
During your leisure time on site, pack the kids off to the playground and set yourself up with a book and a carefree attitude... Then, when you've worked up a thirst, head over to the bar to soak up the surrounds while sipping on an afternoon tipple on the roomy and scenic terrace.
For food, pick up supplies in nearby Vila do Gerês to bring back and bang on the barbecue – for dinner among yet more time surveying your national park surrounds.

Local attractions
Outdoorsy activities are available around the surrounding lands of Peneda-Gerês National Park and in Albergaria forest, including hiking along the Pedra Bela trail, canoeing, waterskiing and windsurfing at Albufeira de Caniçada‘s reservoir, and horse riding and paragliding with local excursion organisers.
The local and wholly plungeable pools, lagoons and waterfalls are also a must-see around here, so be sure to squeeze in a visit to some or all: Cascata do Arado, Sete lagoas, Poço Azul, Cascata Tahiti, Cascata da Portela do Homem, which all lie between 25 and an hour and 15 minutes’ drive.
Wildlife spotters, watch out too: you’ll be lucky enough to be staying among a landscape that’s inhabited by creatures both land- and air-based, from wild boar, deer, badgers, and wolves to eagles, the king kites and hawks and heaps more.
And finally, the site owner recommends a trip to the submerged village of Vilarinho da Furna, whose ruins now poke out just above the waters of the reservoir, and to the 17th-century church of São Bento da Porta Aberta, 12 minutes’ drive away.
