What might you sink your teeth into at Monte das Louzeiras, near the Spanish border between Seville and Serpa? Wine, harvested by the site from the vineyard next to the olive grove with 300-year-old trees… petiscos (local snacks)… sunset drinks… a barbecue? When it comes to scenery, the set-up is just as tasty, with a 40-hectare olive grove in the Serra Adiça and animals like sheep, horses, dogs, cats, geese, chickens, peacocks and an ostrich on the farm. The hosts Ana Luisa, Marc and VIP resident Dunga the ostrich live on the farm. They produce wine in amphorae and oak barrels, but their store stocks more besides wine: olive oil, piri piri, honeys, vinegars, flavoured salts and oils, and cosmetic products made from olive oil. It’s a family business with Swiss and Portuguese roots – and they’re very welcoming. There’s a good slice of nature at Monte das Louzeiras. In the garden, the hosts can provide breakfast, petiscos or even a barbecue. There’s a spacious patio surrounded by orange-toned trees, where they’ll be happy to serve you their wines and other drinks at sunset. And you'll be able to use the outdoor pool for a cooling dip too. When it comes to sampling local produce, you’ve got two main choices: olive oil and wine-tasting in the site’s adega or heading out on the Alentejo Wine Route. For snacks, the options are those served on site or a café in the little village of Vale de Vargo, 35 minutes’ walk away. Collect any groceries you need from the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away, and then make your way to Serpa, 20 minutes’ drive away. This small town has cultural events and museums, plus it’s considered to be the capital of Cante Alentejano, a UNESCO-listed traditional Portuguese music genre.

From the manager: Herzlichen Dank für Euren Besuch, ich hoffe, dass Ihr weiterhin eine tolle Reise habt. Mit einem Jagdhund zu reisen ist wahrlich eine grosse Herausforderung. Naja, die Katzen, wie man Sie liebt, können Diese für Hunde auch etwas nervig sein. Auf unserer Farm mit über 40Ha machen Diese einen tollen Job, keine Schlangen, keine Raten oder Skorpione. Es sind wahrlich tolle Helfer. Nun ja, leider hat Ihr toller Hund eines der Kätzchen erwischt. In der Regel hatten wir bisher keine Probleme mit den Hunden der Gäste, daher freuen wir uns immer wieder auf die vierbeinigen Freunde. Aber wie Sie auch erwähnt hatten ist das Reisen mit Ihrem Jagdhund nicht ganz einfach. Liebe Grüsse und ein schönes Wochenende an der Westküste.

Romantica bell tent

Liked: The bell tent was very comfortable and lovely to sleep and wake up with the sounds of the countryside. Marc and Louisa are extremely friendly and helpful. The pool was great to cool off. The patio was nice for having meals or relaxing. The cats, kittens, peacocks and chickens were very entertaining especially at dinner time! Good Wi-Fi. The free drinking water and coffee was nice. Beautiful wine and honey as well :)

Disliked: There is a bit of driving to visit attractions and towns. Serpa, where there are restaurants, supermarkets and a couple of museums is 15/20 mins away but the roads are good and very quiet in this region which makes this more than worth it to stay in such a tranquil, beautiful location.

Liked: Me gustaría recomendar este precioso lugar lleno de paz y armonía, lejos de la ruidosa ciudad. Puedes disfrutar de sus bonitas y cuidadas estancias de la mano de Marc y Louisa que realmente son unos anfitriones excelentes, haciéndote sentir como en casa. Disfrutar un buen vino, mirar el manto de estrellas que cubre el lugar, compartir el espacio con infinidad de animales. Realmente un lugar para volver!!

Liked: Lovely camping in an olive grove next to the owner's residence, which included a lounge area. They also sell olive oil, wines and other goodies. The pool was small but clean, great to cool off. We had ordered the breakfast, which we thoroughly enjoyed and definitely recommend. Thank you Marc and Anna-Louisa (apologies if we misspelled this), who were wonderful hosts and very eager to help.

Disliked: Parking in the olive groves was quite dusty when dry, and probably muddy when wet.

Liked: Fabulous facilities and a beautiful area. Marc, Luisa and Matilde are super friendly hosts who do everything possible for their guests. On our first night, they made a bbq where we met fellow guests and had a great evening getting to know everyone.

Liked: We can honestly say we have never before stayed on a site that made us so happy. From the initial welcome and the delicious barbecue and wines shared with other campers and the hosts. Throughout our stay we were treated like friends/family. We felt thoroughly looked after and were spoilt by the kindness of our lovely hosts Mark, Anna Louisa and Mathilde. We enjoyed the back to nature feel of the site, enjoyed the variety of animals - even got to feed the Ostrich! Lovely clean facilities. Idyllic place. Hope to return soon.

Local attractions

Just because you’re in landlocked Beja doesn’t mean that there are no water activities… the Alqueva (45 minutes’ drive) is the largest dam in western Europe, and there’s more than one way to take in the landscape. Take to the water with a canoe, paddleboard or boat or cruise around the shore on walking and mountain biking trails past castles. Along the route is Luz (an hour), a village that originally sank beneath the dam before being relocated, and the medieval houses of Monsaraz (an hour and five minutes). The area around the lake is a popular patch for stargazers; in Alentejo, the stars are often very vivid. In the way of water, pretty Pulo do Lobo (50 minutes) – which means ‘wolf’s leap’ in Portuguese – is another gorgeous spot. On the river Guadiana, the gorge has the tallest waterfall in south Portugal. Take a picnic trek or grab a bite to eat in the local villages.
