  • Ensuite affordable Baltistan glamping units overlooking Sogha Lake
  • A half-hour drive from Khaplu city; handy base for mountain treks
  • Three fishing lakes on site, stocked with trout and other fish
Now, this is a special spot indeed – Royal Resort and Fish Farm is in a most spectacular Baltistan location, overlooking the glittering waters of Sogha Lake and with the peaks of the Himalaya mountains and Karakoram mountains like K-2, Gasherbrum I and II and Broad Peak towering in the background. Just across the water from the town of Khaplu (and about two and a half hours’ drive from Skardu city), this friendly resort welcomes visitors from around the country and international tourists, who come to this area to climb mountains, explore the history and culture and eat the delicious food this region has become known for the world over. And of course, many guests come here to fish as well – the accommodation here is arranged around the resort’s three lovely lakes, which are stocked with trout and other fish for guests to catch. The rest of the resort is made up of lush greenery, with pretty flower gardens dotted around as well. Accommodation at this resort is designed to be comfortable and welcoming, without breaking the bank. Each of the glamping units has its own toilet and mini kitchen, with a heater, towels and bed linen all provided too (in fact, the beds will be made up ready for your arrival – good news if you're coming straight from a strenuous hike…) A barbecue and firewood are provided too, so you can get grilling with any fish you’ve managed to hook. If you didn’t have any luck at the lake, look out instead for shared meals being organised on site, visit the bakery/store a few minutes’ drive away or head towards Khaplu for cafés, restaurants and food shops.

Local attractions

This resort makes a good place to spend a night or two before or after treks in the Himalaya mountains, or you can use it as a base for day trips to some of the area’s top spots if you’re not actually planning to scale the mountains. For example, one of the best K2 viewpoints (known as Machulo La) is about a 50-minute drive from Royal Resort. From this resort you can also head out into the Hushe Valley, the Siachin Valley and the Kondus Valley, for views of the area’s spectacular peaks, along with places where you can see things like rock carvings and waterfalls. The ancient Buddha Rock, with a huge face carved into the rock, is about two hours’ drive away as well. Closer to home, spend some time in the city of Khaplu, visiting the Chaqchan Mosque (one of the oldest in the region, dating from 1370) and the Khaplu Palace (known locally as Yabgo Khar), a heritage site from the mid 19th century.
