- Stargazing and mountain views; river walks and cycle rides from site
‘Tena koutou ma nga mihi’ – welcome to Jackson’s Retreat Alpine Holiday Park on New Zealand’s South Island, handily located just off Great Alpine Highway 73, the road linking Christchurch on New Zealand’s east coast with the west coast and Glacier Region.
The holiday park has 15 acres of campground with spectacular backdrops of the Taramakau River, snow-capped mountains in the Southern Alps, waterfalls and rainforest.
With views like this, it's no surprise that the camp owners are keen to protect the area for future generations and give visitors a real sense of the local nature – with that in mind, pitches are set among native bush providing a peaceful, relaxing and eco-friendly environment.
The team here are on hand to dispense tips on local sightseeing and share traditional hospitality, knowledge and beliefs based on mutual respect between host and guests. They'll also point you towards some great things to do nearby – but when you do spend time at your site, try to catch a vivid sunset or do some stargazing – South Island is the largest Dark Sky Reserve on the planet.
