  • Family-friendly campground in Kaikoura, a two-minute walk from the sea
  • Kaikoura Peninsula hikes and whale-watching flights 10 minutes’ drive
  • Large communal kitchen, barbecue provided; laundry; mountain views
How close do you want to be to your marine wildlife-themed experiences? Well, how does “very close indeed” sound? At A1 Kaikoura Motel and Holiday Park, you’ll be within walking distance of outfits that arrange whale-watching boat tours, as well as kayak trips among fur seals and swimming with dolphins excursions. The family-friendly campground sits on the outskirts of the town of Kaikoura, on the east coast of the South Island. It’s a five-minute walk into the centre of town, with its shops and cafés, and an even shorter stroll to the pebbly beach. If you’re lugging your own kayak or surfboard (and assorted gear), there’s a seafront car park within a two-minute drive. This proximity gives you all the more time to spend on the water – win. Back at the campground, the communal, industrial-style kitchen has induction hobs, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle and pretty much all you need to prepare your meals – and to clean up after yourself, too, with two large washing-up stations. For provisions, there’s a supermarket just a couple of minutes’ drive along the main road – though there are also several restaurants and pubs en route, so you might just prefer to eat (and drink) out. Other facilities include barbecues, showers and toilets, and a laundry. There’s also a TV room, but chances are you won’t spend much time in front of the box – not with the spectacular mountain and coastal views that surround you.

Local attractions

Sea activities are a powerful magnet around these parts, but there are also entertaining land-based excursions to be had – for example, at Kaikoura Llama Trekking (five minutes’ drive). You can choose between a short woodland tour skirting the Kowhai river, or a longer coastal itinerary around Kaikoura Bay – all with a friendly llama (or alpaca) by your side. A 10-minute drive takes to the start of the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway, a clifftop path with several observation points from where you will be able to take in splendid views of the coastline and – if you’re lucky – spot a breaching whale. The trail also goes past the Kaikoura Seal Colony. Information panels en route illustrate the history and natural wealth of the area. You’ve heard of whale-watching trips… but how does a whale-watching flight grab you? Kaikoura Airport (10 minutes) is home to several outfits that take you by plane or helicopter over the ocean to look at whales from a unique perspective.
