The Dutch word ‘bongerd’ translates as orchard – and that’s exactly what awaits when you get to Camping In de Bongerd, a peaceful site dotted with impeccably maintained flower beds and surrounded by lush trees and agricultural land. But wait: this rural dream just outside the village of Oostkapelle, on the island of Walcheren, also comes with a side of coastal adventures, because the seaside resort of Domburg and its beaches are only a five-minute drive away – or a 15-minute bike ride (cycle hire is available on site).
With accommodation in static caravans sleeping four or six people, this modern site is a top spot for families. While the children spend time in the playground, with swings and a small adventure course, or being entertained at the kids’ club, the adults can unwind in the heated indoor pool (which also comes with a paddling area).
All this activity is bound to get your appetite going. Happy news: you don’t have to leave the site to satisfy your hunger, for there is a restaurant here, plus a small camp shop and a morning bakery service through which you can order breakfast bread and pastries. There are also a handful of dining options in the village and loads more along the seafront in Domburg. After dining with a view of the North Sea, a stroll through De Manteling van Walcheren, the nature reserve stretching right at the back of the beach, ought to kick-start your digestion.

Within the manicured parkland of Westhove Castle, Terra Maris (five minutes’ drive or a 10-minute bike ride) is a natural history museum with displays on the regional landscape and wildlife, including collections of fossils and shells, plus assorted taxidermy.
In the provincial capital Middelburg (15 minutes), museums explore the production of chocolate (Sjakie’s Galerie for Willie Wonka Villa) and the heritage of the Zeeland region through textiles, paintings and crafts (Zeeuws Museum). There are far-reaching city views from the Tall John Abbey Tower.
The Iguana Reptile Zoo in Vlissingen (25 minutes) is home to several hundred tropical snakes and amphibians, from lizards and turtles to frogs and alligators. In the harbour, the Museumschip Hr.Ms. Mercuur (A856) is a former wooden minesweeper; check out its engine room, radio cabin and galley kitchen to learn all about life aboard the ship.
