Within the manicured parkland of Westhove Castle, Terra Maris (five minutes’ drive or a 10-minute bike ride) is a natural history museum with displays on the regional landscape and wildlife, including collections of fossils and shells, plus assorted taxidermy. In the provincial capital Middelburg (15 minutes), museums explore the production of chocolate (Sjakie’s Galerie for Willie Wonka Villa) and the heritage of the Zeeland region through textiles, paintings and crafts (Zeeuws Museum). There are far-reaching city views from the Tall John Abbey Tower. The Iguana Reptile Zoo in Vlissingen (25 minutes) is home to several hundred tropical snakes and amphibians, from lizards and turtles to frogs and alligators. In the harbour, the Museumschip Hr.Ms. Mercuur (A856) is a former wooden minesweeper; check out its engine room, radio cabin and galley kitchen to learn all about life aboard the ship.
