Need a break from the pace of your normal life? At Camping de Oude Rijn, a five-minute drive – or short cycle – from the neighbouring town of Ter Aar in South Holland, it's time to slow it all down with some laidback activities. What a spot: the site is only 25 minutes' drive away from the Keukenhof flower garden and 45 minutes from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Golfing fans, listen up too: the greens at Zeegersloot golf club are five minutes' drive from the site, where wannabe pros can do some practising on the driving range, take lessons and play their way around 27 holes, then thoroughly sample the eats and drinks of the bar-restaurant. Anglers can throw out a line from the fishing piers at Zegerplas, under 10 minutes’ drive from the site, and reel in perch, roach, bream or pike. Zegerplas not fulfilling your fishing dreams? The Kromme Aar waterway or the further afield Noordeinderplas might tick the right boxes. Back on site, cook up some fish on the barbecue (bring your own, please) and tuck in beside a campfire. If you didn't have any luck with the rod and reel, there are plenty of shops in Ter Aar to pick up the essentials.

Liked: De ruime plek en de rust op de camping.

Disliked: Was niet blij met de hoogte van de toeristenbelasting. Die klopte niet voor betreffende gemeente (gecheckt).
Een euro voor de douche die het niet deed. Klein straaltje en of te heet of te koud. Je kon de douchekop ook niet ophangen. Al met al was het sanitairgebouw vreselijk gedateerd.

Liked: Nothing, only the wifi

Disliked: We were with a group with children an older people with 25 people with 5 caravans and some tents. We do this already 40 years and this was the worsest camping in 40 years. Showers out of order and several times no hot water. For empty the chemical toilet no waterhose and a lot of dirt.

From the manager: Ala u vragen of opmerkingen heeft had u ook naar ons / de receptie kunnen komen echter hebben we van niemand iets gehoord over de douche was het een hele vervelende timing dat de ketel 1 dag stuk ging wij hebben met de pinksteren op een zondag een loodgieter laten komen om alles weer te maken ! Nogmaals u had ook even naar ons toe kunnen komen

Liked: Der Stellplatz war ein Rasenplatz, frisch gemäht und sauber.

Disliked: Die Toiletten waren schmutzig, die Duschen waren kaputt. Musste kalt duschen obwohl ich 1 € eingeworfen hatten. Überall waren Spinnen und Insekten.

Liked: Really awesome place, loved it, it was so cosy and generally, it was very friendly. Overall the people were nice and it was easy to find!

Disliked: Toilets could be a bit cleaner, but overall its fine! I can totally understand how difficult it is to keep stuff like that clean!

Local attractions

Camping de Oude Rijn is well placed for those who want the peace and quiet of the countryside but also days out on urban adventures: the site is in a central location within 45 minutes' drive of The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. On rural days, take a trip to Nieuwkoopse Plassen nature reserve (10 minutes' drive) for boat trips, water safaris, canoeing, walking and birdwatching, or head to the Netherlands’ oldest botanical gardens at Hortus Botanicus (half an hour) to see what a 16th-century garden looked like. If you’re staying at Camping de Oude Rijn during the spring, a trip to the tulip garden at Keukenhof (25 minutes) is an absolute must. Travel buddies getting on your nerves? Never fear, there’s a non-violent way to fix everything: climb inside some plastic bubbles and let your rage out with a game of bubble football at BumperFootball (25 minutes) in Leiden. If that whets your appetite for more activity, waterski, wakeboard or kneeboard at Wet ‘n Wild (10 minutes) at Zegerplas. There are plenty of theme parks in the area for kids and adults to explore: take a stroll through the history of the Netherlands – from prehistory to the Romans and on to the Middle Ages – at Archeon Museumpark, 10 minutes from Camping de Oude Rijn, or head to the amusement parks at Drievliet (half an hour) or Duinrell (half an hour) to raise your adrenaline on the rides.
