When you’re after peace and quiet, a rural setting and a site run on eco-sustainable lines, you’ll get the lot at Camping Zomersbuiten, five minutes’ drive from Oude Pekela in gorgeous Groningen. As well as spacious pitches shaded by trees and surrounded by greenery and flowers, this site has an eco-fruit and vegetable garden and a food forest, from which you can pick seasonal produce to use in your cooking. Kids will have a field day at the petting farm, where they can help feed the donkeys, sheep and goats; toddlers get free rein to mess around in the sandpit and there are climbing frames for older children too. When you’re out and about across the site, watch out for the roe deer, pheasants, egrets and honey bees that make their home there as well. In keeping with the environmentally friendly principles on which the site is run, it generates its own electricity to heat water for the modern shower block. However, you’d be wise to bring torches for moving around after dark. As waste water is purified naturally in a manmade reed bed with gravel, it’s vital that you don’t empty chemical toilets on site and only use biodegradable products in them please.

Liked Quite, good facilities, access to coffee machine 24/7 reasonable price as well. I didn't get the guys name on site. But he was super friendly and very helpful. He had a beard and pretty sure he has a motorcycle because we talked bikes for a while. I was motocamping on my motorcycle.

We vinden het vervelend dat u minder tevreden was over de verlichting bij het sanitair en dat u overlast heeft ervaren van de werkzaamheden tijdens de pinksterdagen. Onze excuses daarvoor. We zijn inderdaad bezig met verbeteringen op het terrein, maar begrijpen dat dit voor gasten niet storend mag zijn. Uw opmerking nemen we dan ook serieus en we kijken hoe we dit in de toekomst netter kunnen plannen en communiceren.

Ook de verlichting bij de toiletten nemen we mee als aandachtspunt.

Liked Friendly welcome with a tot of snaaps, and a spare toilet roll. Underfloor heating in sanitary block warm on a chilly morning. Facilities carefully cleaned. Petting zoo very good for children, supervised feeding of donkey etc.. Staff promptly sorted out electric connection issues we shared with neighbour.

Disliked Hot water sometimes ran low. Ongoing building work on site.

Local attractions

Walkers and cyclists certainly won’t go short of inspo when it comes to finding trails around Groningen. The Walking in Westerwolde Foundation has marked out some 40 hiking routes ranging from family-friendly short strolls to longer yomps to the impressive fortifications at Bourtange Fortress Museum (four hours’ walk). South and East Groningen are covered with a labyrinth of cycling routes; from Westerwolde (an hour by bike) winding cycle paths cross heathland to sleepy rural villages, and mountain bikers also have a network of MTB tracks to discover. Other local sports include canoeing along the Westerwoldse Aa river (five minutes’ walk) and Ruiten Aa Canal (20 minutes’ drive) – you can rent a canoe at the Peddel en Zo (25 minutes). Alternatively, learn how to sail at Zeilschool Blauwestad or try skydiving over Groningen from Oostwold (both 20 minutes). Park Borgerswold (20 minutes) is the place for recreational fishing, waterskiing, hot-air ballooning and playing golf, or you can treat the kids to the waterslides and lazy river at Swimming Tropiqua (15 minutes). If you’d like a day off from all that sporting activity, your kids will no doubt appreciate the dinosaur trail at Landgoed Tenaxx amusement park (five minutes).
