It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-run site with natural swimming pond and pondside beach
- Charging stations for electric bikes
- Snack bar, sports areas, playground and trampoline
It's the Netherlands, so you'll want to get on your bike. And where should cyclists set their sights on from the countryside site of Camping De Bouwte? Around the many cycling paths of the surrounding Groningen countryside, for starters (and for picnics), or for family days at the likes of Oldambtmeer lake half an hour away. To take it rightly easy, say sayonara to the car altogether and get the bus to province capital Groningen, then hire a bike there to explore the city.
If you're the sort to take two-wheeling nice and easily indeed, you'll also be chuffed to learn that Camping De Bouwte has its own charging stations for bikes of the electric variety, so you can juice up and set off for a Netherlands cycling day with minimum fuss. Or you could ponder on taking things with extreme ease while on holiday here and just laze about the site instead, where leisurely pursuits are around for all ages.
A clear swimming pond, big peaceful garden and pondside beach with climbing net should be enough to sort a day or two's lazing, and there's a playground, trampoline, football pitch and courts for basketball and volleyball too to keep everyone active. The Joker bar's wide selection of meals, sandwiches, ice cream, coffee and cake will plant a smile on your face when it's time to retreat for some eats and drinks...

Local attractions
Attractions aplenty can be reached in the surrounding area via a short drive, bike ride or walk. By bike, it's only a few minutes' ride to the 18th-century Ennemaborg estate, on a scenic ride through the eastern Groningen countryside, Midwolderbos forest and Reiderwolde nature area. The Hermans Dijkstra farming museum is also within a few minutes' cycle.
For a family day, take a boat out onto the deep blue waters of peaceful Oldambtmeer lake, 15 minutes by car or about 30 by bike from De Bouwte. There's also the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Pieterburen about 50 minutes' drive away, where injured or sick seals are looked after before being released back into the wild. The centre is open daily.
A bus ride of an hour and 20 minutes or a drive of 50 minutes will take you to the province capital Groningen city, where you can hire bikes to ride along to popular places like the Groninger Museum, the maritime museum, the comics museum and the graphics museum. If you're around in the evening, Groningen as a student city has a buzzing nightlife, with many bars and clubs open until 5am – huzzah.
