  • Small friendly canalside site five minutes' drive from New Amsterdam
  • Plopsa theme park, Wildlands zoo and Van Gogh House within 20 minutes
  • English-style tearooms on site; private bathroom for each pitch
Tea served in china cups, alongside cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream… yes, you’re unmistakably… by the side of a Dutch canal? Wander into the café at bijou little Aquamarijn and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d landed in Devon rather than Drenthe… for it’s been set up in the style of ye olde English tearooms, with a range of top-notch beverages, homemade apple pies and sumptuous afternoon teas (all available to book ahead). After something a little stronger? Panic not – the café can also furnish you with a glass of wine. Settling on the terrace or in the cosy lounge area with your cuppa/glass is a fine way to round off a day around this peaceful rural site, whether you chose to spend it fishing next door on the Stieltjeskanaal, biking or walking through the Drenthe forests, or taking the kids out for a day of fun (Plopsa amusement park and Emmen’s Wildlands zoo are both nearby and popular with families). After tea, it’s down to the serious business of chilling out: the relaxed vibe here means no organised entertainment or playground facilities but plenty of space for the kids to roam in the fresh air… while the grownups put their feet up and listen to the birds twittering in the trees. Plenty of facilities are available on site (laundry, free wifi and the like) but the one that stands out for many guests is that each pitch has a private bathroom included in the price.

Local attractions

This is an excellent spot to start from if you’re up for a bit of bike-based roaming: hire wheels on site, then set out on local cycle paths to nearby villages (Dalen or Schoonenebeek, perhaps) or follow the 17-kilometre trail through the heathland of the Bargerveen nature reserve. Those who prefer viewing their surrounds in a more leisurely fashion can cruise past windmills on an old Dutch barge from Oranjedorp or take a narrow-gauge train trip from the railway museum in Erica. Both are around 15 minutes’ drive away. Swot up on local history with trips to the Van Gogh House in New Amsterdam, the ancient dolmen in Borger and the Camp Westerbork memorial centre. If that’s all a bit too much like school for the nippers, follow up with a zoo day at Wildlands in Emmen or a trip to the Plopsa and Slagharen amusement parks.
