It's free, quick and easy!
- Car-free forest site with direct Drouwenerzand nature reserve access
- A 25-minute drive from Assen and 30 minutes from Emmen
- Rides at Slagharen theme park within 45-minute drive
For woodland stays in the pretty Drenthe, settle in for hols at Camping Het Horstmannsbos, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive (about one kilometre) from the small town of Gasselte.
Bordering the Drouwenerzand nature reserve, the site is well placed for outdoorsy getaways. With direct access to the reserve from site, a short stroll will land guests amid forestry and natural sand drifts, where eyes ought to be kept peeled for rare juniper and wild thyme, the three-horned dung beetle and cave doves. The reserve is also home to a herd of heathland sheep that occasionally wanders on to site.
The site itself has top-notch nature credentials too: as well as having its own natural sand drifts to explore, the site is car-free, meaning there’s nothing stopping kids taking full advantage of the space to play and explore. A high-season activities team will ensure young minds (and grownup minds) are kept busy, with a focus on nature allowing kids to build huts in the forest or go on bug hunts.
Stuck for something to do? Start by hitting a few golf balls at the club about two kilometres away, then head into Gasselte to spend afternoons (or entire days) at the largest open-air waterpark in the Netherlands. For more inspiration, trot along to the on-site reception, where the team will be more than happy to suggest things to do, or provide guests with walking and biking routes.

Local attractions
Kids who are begging for some high-octane days will be easily satisfied hereabouts. The site is five minutes’ drive from the rides, ponies and miniatures trains of Drouwenerzand Attractiepark, which should suit younger progeny, and older kids (and grownups) may be handily enticed by the rollercoasters and waterslides at Slagharen theme park (45 minutes).
For more serious, educational days, start 10 minutes from base at the archaeological museum Hunebedcentrum, before moving on to visits to Kamp Westerbork concentration camp museum (25 minutes) and Planetron planetarium and observatory (35 minutes).
Time outdoors may be best spent at Schoonhoven swimming and fishing lakes (40 minutes), where – it should come as no surprise – visitors can swim and fish, as well as lounge on the sandy beach and traipse along walking trails. Even more laid back days can be had at the tiny Zoo Bizar (25 minutes), among the bats, lizards and spiders.
There’s another (regular-sized) zoo in nearby Emmen (30 minutes), along with a swathe of famed dolmens and a World War II museum, and Assen (25 minutes) is a must-visit for its shops, bars, restaurants, and TT Circuit and museum.
