  • Stays on the grounds of a stunning historic farmhouse in Gelderland
  • Zutphen, Apeldoorn and Deventer within 20 minutes’ drive
  • Canoe rental, bike rental, indoor play centre and shared kitchen
For stays in the pretty province of Gelderland, within handy reach of cities, national parks and entertainment of all sorts, opt for hols at Camping De Adelaar, a family-friendly site on an old farm about a kilometre from the town of Voorst. Guests’ first few days can be spent getting orientated, starting by setting gazes on the award-winning historic farmhouse it’s set out around, before renting canoes and launching off onto the stream that runs along its border. That’s not the only way to explore round here: there’s bike hire on site too, so local pedals are a must (those who don’t know where to start would benefit mightily from a pitstop at reception for brochures). On days when staying indoors just makes more sense, that’s sorted here too. The barn has been converted into an area for kids, with reading nooks, a pool table and lots to play with. The barn also houses the farm’s Brandrode cattle – a very old breed – and guests might also meet dogs, cats, rabbits, lambs and sheep during stays. When it comes time to eat, it’s an easy walk into Voorst to call into butchers, supermarkets and a famed artisan bakery, and all supplies can be cooked up on guests’ barbecues. There’s also a shared kitchen with a microwave, fridge, coffee machine and washing-up facilities. If a break from cooking is needed, there’s a Texas-themed steakhouse less than 200 metres from the site, and a pancake house, a pizzeria and a restaurant in Voorst.

Local attractions

For outdoorsy adventures, begin with the five-minute drive to Bussloo lake – where seven beaches, a pitch-and-putt course and famed thermal baths should keep everyone busy – then travel onwards to the artificial Loenen waterfall (15 minutes) and the sprawling Hoge Veluwe National Park (20 minutes). Families with kids in tow might like to gear some days towards kid-friendly activities such as the imagination-driven art and play park De Spelerij (25 minutes), where little guests can learn how things work, how to play together and how to make bread. To set foot on city streets, there are plenty of options nearby, with Apeldoorn, Deventer and Zutphen all within 20 minutes' drive. Head to the first for Julianatoren amusement park, Apenheul primate park, treetop courses and the stunning Het Loo palace; to Deventer for museums and the spectacular architecture of Lebuïnuskerk; and to Zutphen for boating tours and the pretty painted surfaces that adorn the Farmer Kip museum. Inspired by days dipping toes in the past? Perhaps plan a trip to one of the castles – such as Doorwerth, Middachten, Ruurlo, Cannenburch and Hackfort – within 40 minutes' drive.
