  • Peaceful family-friendly park on the banks of the Rhederlaag
  • A 45-minute bike ride from Arnhem and the Veluwezoom National Park
  • Private beach with swimming area, watersports and fishing
A private beach – the height of luxury? Have it for a wallet-pleasingly small number of euros by staying at Recreatiepark Rhederlaagse Meren, which has its own splendid sandy stretch on the Rhederlaag. Swimming, fishing, sailing and watersports are all on hand at the lake for those with an appetite for activity – as is plenty of waterside space for those who’d rather settle in for a period of doing not a lot, thanks very much... Away from the water’s edge there’s another opportunity to get wet at the outdoor pool, with a separate paddling pool for the small sorts to splash in and a comfy grass area all around for those tasked with supervising. Grownups can then towel the tiddlers off and pack them off to the playgrounds, or to brush up their ball skills at the tennis court or panna court. Activities galore are also at their disposal in summer at the kids’ club. Feeding needs are well served here too: the central food court houses a restaurant, a burger bar and a cosy café-bar, as well as a shop that’s stocked with fresh meat, veg and bread baked inhouse each day. When it’s time to venture out, it’s a leisurely 45-minute bike ride along the banks of the IJssel river to Arnhem or to the forests, sand dunes and heathland of Veluwezoom, the country’s oldest national park.

Local attractions

Start by taking the 45-minute bike ride (or 20-minute drive) into Arnhem, to wander through the Sonsbeek Park and visit the war museum, for an insight into everyday life during World War II. A few kilometres out of town are Burgers Zoo and the Netherlands Open-air Museum, both of which are top places for a day trip with the nippers (or without – grownups will likely love the zoo’s apes and penguins too). If you’d really like to get up close to the monkeys, head up to Apenheul a 45-minute drive from the site, where more than 200 primates roam freely among the visitors. There’s plenty of wildlife to see in the Veluwezoom National Park too – red deer and wild boar are often spotted here, and it’s a lovely place for a hike, bike ride or horseback trek as well.
