It's free, quick and easy!
- Well-equipped safari tents at a family site just outside Kesteren
- Close to Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, 45 mins' drive to Utrecht
- Play areas, restaurant, entertainment and lakes for fishing or swims
If fuss-free family holidays are on your wishlist, Villatent at Camping Betuwe should be a place that’ll fit the bill nicely. Smart safari tents at this family-friendly site in the Gelderland countryside have been set up to make life easy.
Much of what you’ll need for a comfy break is provided: as well as having beds set up, each tent is kitted out with a private bathroom, a kitchen area and space to relax either indoors or out on the deck. If you don’t fancy cooking that’s no problem – the site has a cosy brasserie with a varied menu and an outdoor terrace.
Other facilities on site include indoor and outdoor play areas, a pétanque court, table tennis, an archery range and a giant jumping pillow. Bikes and go-karts can be rented here, and there are two lakes for fishing and swims, plus a sandy beach area for sunbathing.
During the summer months the site puts on kids’ activities by day (treasure hunts, crafts, bingo and the like) and family-friendly evening entertainment for all the family. Dogs are welcome to stay in the tents but you’ll need to keep them on a leash elsewhere around the site and pay attention to which areas they’re not allowed in (the catering area and the swimming lake among them).
And what of getting out and about? Camping Betuwe, five minutes’ drive from Kesteren, is close to the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore the area on foot, by bike or on boat trips, taking in orchards, river views and pretty villages along the way.

Local attractions
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park (20 minutes’ drive) is the big draw around here – and with good reason, because its heaths, forests and sands are great for walking, biking or horse riding. A little closer to home, De Blauwe Kamer nature reserve (10 minutes) is a good spot for birdwatchers, and there’s more for both wildlife-spotters and cyclists in the Hoge Veluwe National Park (half an hour).
Once you’ve seen some native wildlife, check out more exotic species at Ouwehands Zoo (five minutes), or make a day of it at Burgers' Zoo (half an hour), exploring the various ecosystem areas from desert to ocean via mangroves, rainforest and savannah. If you’d rather fill your days in true local style, make outings to Amerongen Castle (25 minutes) and Duurstede Castle (35 minutes) or take a stroll through the Gardens of Appeltern (25 minutes).
For a bit of urban time, head to the canals, museums and galleries of ’s-Hertogenbosch (40 minutes), or get over to Utrecht (45 minutes) for the Miffy Museum and the chance to get underground at DOMUnder’s interactive exhibition.
