It's free, quick and easy!
- Small and peaceful site a 10-minute walk from Barra beach
- A 20-minute drive from Tofo Beach town and half an hour from Inhambane
- Outdoor and indoor pool with bar and restaurant; communal barbecue
Dream of galloping on horseback over white sand dunes? It needn't be a distant prospect at Faraway Lodge and Camping, a 10-minute walk from Mozambique’s Barra beach.
Should your dreams extend to snorkelling with sea turtles, swimming amongst manta rays or sailing into an ancient trading port on a dhow, you’ll be equally well fixed from a base at this friendly site in Inhambane province.
It makes a fine spot to unwind in between adventures as well, with an outdoor pool, a covered pool for those days when the sun’s a little bit too shiny, and a sunken bar you can swim up to for cold beers and R and Rs (that’s the local tipple… rum and raspberry, and right good it is too).
There's a restaurant on site; further bars and beach-facing eateries specialising in just caught fish and seafood are a five-minute walk away in Barra, and it’s around 20 minutes’ drive to a bucketful of watersports, diving, snorkelling and sea fishing in the bigger resort town of Tofo Beach.
Where possible, the buildings on this low-impact site are made from natural and locally sourced materials, and the facilities include hot showers and a communal barbecue area.

Local attractions
A 20-minute drive away, Tofo Beach is the go-to spot for surfing, kayaking and windsurfing, as well as organised activities and excursions. Between June and October, whale watching trips are the main attraction, and throughout the year small boats with experienced guides take snorkellers and divers out to swim among the whale sharks, hammerheads and sea turtles.
Tofo’s also the top destination for dune rides, whether done on horseback or at greater speed on quad bikes, while anglers, expert and otherwise can fish from the shore or head out to sea for the landing of tuna and kingfish, sailfish and marlin.
Whatever you do, do it in a dhow: these sleek and simple sailing boats once made the trip over here from Arabia, and remain in use today for fishing and pleasure rides. Take a trip from Barra out to Pansy Island, filled with coloured shells, and to Pig Island, filled with… pigs, as well as friendly traditional villages. Or sail into the former ivory trading outpost of Imhabane, feeling as if you’re in another century.
It’s half an hour by road to Inhambane if you prefer terra firma: this is a pretty old town of Arab, Portuguese and African influences, worth a wander for its old mosque, museum and lively market.
