- Wild campsite in the mountains half an hour’s drive from Budva
- Fort Kosmač five minutes’ drive; Skadar Lake National Park an hour
- Spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea; communal barbecues available
When you really need to get away from everything (and everybody too), pack your tent and head for Mrtvica. This scenic wild camping site is set in rugged countryside near Brajići (five minutes’ drive), a village situated in the mountains above Budva (half an hour) in Montenegro. At over 1,000 metres up, the air is clear and pure, the peace is absolute and you’re surrounded by forests and craggy peaks.
The catches? There are none, but as this is true wild camping, amenities on site are few and far between, so you’ll need to bring everything you need with you, particularly torches for getting around after dark. There are portable toilets and simple showers (but no hot water) on site, and a natural spring where you can fill up on mountain water, plus a couple of communal barbecues for cooking alfresco along with spectacular views right down to the Adriatic Sea.
There are well-signposted walking and cycling routes right from the pitches – great for exercising any dogs that might be with you – and if you’d like to try the local cuisine, the site owners can organise tasting tours for you.

Local attractions
While there’s a stunning view to the sea from the campsite, the photogenic ruins of Fort Kosmač (five minutes’ drive) stand further up into the mountains and from there you can see right to Sveti Nikola Island in Budva Bay. If you’re up at the fort on a clear day, get ready for a spectacular blaze of colour at sunset. Other local viewpoints include Lipa (five minutes’ walk) and Panorama Chelobrdo (five minutes’ drive), both with far-reaching coastal panoramas over the Budva Riviera.
With all these views beckoning you, it would be a shame to miss out on visiting Budva (half an hour) itself. This lively resort has an historic old town with a 15th-century citadel, around which swirls a jumping dining and nightclub scene. Its beaches are water-sports hubs where you can go jetsking and parasailing, or stick to kayaks and pedal boats for less high-octane adventures on the seas.
There are more beaches to be found in Montenegro’s portion of Skadar Lake National Park (around an hour), which it shares with Albania. This mountainous nature reserve has many forest walks to follow as well as boat cruises to ancient monasteries on minuscule islets in the lake.
