  • Spacious and shaded pitches with stunning valley views
  • A 15-minute walk from the historic centre of Assisi
  • Restaurant with woodfired oven and bar selling homemade ice cream
Say ‘si, si’ to Assisi, and say ‘si, si’ to rural Umbria too. Camping Fontemaggio is in a fab position on the edge of the handsome hill town and with gorgeous valley views all around from its spacious and shaded pitches. A stroll to the historic centre should stretch to around 15 minutes or so; if you’re not up for that for whatever reason site staff will happily sort you with a taxi or point you towards places to park in the city. They’re also able to book you on town tours or rural donkey treks if you’d like a bit of guidance as you roam the area... Fear not the walk back from town if you're on foot: if you need something of an incentive, perhaps the homemade ice cream on sale in the bar during high season will spur you along the road...? The site also has a well-stocked mini market for if you're planning picnics or DIY dinners, and a restaurant for those who require easy eats in the form of woodfired pizzas or traditional Umbrian dishes. The folk here are keen that guests enjoy those spectacular views in peace, so they’ve shunned noisy activities and limited their facilities to the essentials of electric hook-ups, hot showers, a launderette and a playground: certainly to be considered essential if you’re bringing energetic kids who aren’t quite so enamoured with view admiring...

Local attractions

Assisi’s famed as a popular day trip destination but its long list of attractions mean it deserves rather more of your time if at all poss. Start with the big sights of course: the Basilica di San Francesco and Basilica Superiore (both with frescoes attributed to Giotto), the Eremo delle Carceri caves and Rocca Maggiore castle are among the good reasons why the town earned its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Beyond that, there are little museums and churches to explore, and some fab cafés and restaurants for frequent refreshment stops. If the centre gets a tad busy, retreat to the rural surrounds for walks in Bosco di San Francesco or Monte Subasio State Park just outside town, or head to one of the wineries within a 15-minute drive. And if you really want to escape the crowds, well... you could always fling yourself off a mountain… attached to a paraglider, of course: take flight with an outfit in town that’ll strap you in to a tandem glider for safe passage back to earth. Rather stick to ground level throughout, grazie? Bike tours, Segway tours and donkey treks are available too.
