If you’re planning on going to Sicily this year, consider staying at Camping Biscione, a peaceful site on the outskirts of the small town of Petrosino (five minutes’ drive), on the island’s west coast.
The best bit about it? You’ll be less than five minutes’ walk from the seafront, where you can choose between a rocky shore, where kids might be able to spot assorted marine life, and a sandy stretch. Then, all you have to do is unfurl your towel and relax as you gaze upon the many fishing boats bobbing along the shore.
This is also the place for watersports, from snorkelling to windsurfing. If you have your own board, you can just take to the water; if you need to hire any equipment, there are several outfits in Mazara del Vallo (20 minutes’ drive), where you can also have a go at kitesurfing.
Accommodation at the site, which is popular with both families and motorcyclists, is on a green lawn shaded by tall palm trees. You won’t have to go far when you start to feel hungry, with an excellent restaurant on site serving pizza and freshly caught local fish. If you’d rather make your own meals, barbecues are allowed, and you can gather provisions from a small supermarket a five-minute drive away. There are also shops and restaurants in Petrosino town.
In addition to a toilet block, there are hot-water showers (available 24 hours a day), a washing-up area and a token-operated launderette.

Local attractions
Unless you agree on a designated driver, it would be wise to catch a taxi to Marsala (20 minutes’ drive), where you can tour historic cellars and taste the renowned fortified wine. The city is also known for the Parco Archeologico di Lilibeo, which comprises the ruins of a Carthaginian city with well-preserved mosaics and a museum housing restored Roman and Carthaginian ships.
Overlooking the sea, Selinunte Archaeological Park (45 minutes) covers the ruins of an ancient Greek settlement. After checking out the multiple temples and the necropolis, take a rest and go for a dip at the sandy beach.
The salt pans around the city of Trapani (50 minutes) are well worth a look, not least for the birdlife they attract, which includes flamingos and herons. From Trapani, you can also catch a ferry to the island of Favignana, where you can spend the day exploring sheltered coves and rocky beaches.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass motorhome site
Liked Late in season, very private and quiet campsite. Very good facilitites with free hot water and friendly staff! On site restaurant is also excellent and a bonus!
Disliked Be mindful if travelling with dogs, as there were a number of on-site dogs present.
