Coastal walks with scenic views, peaceful dips in the Ionian sea, and a city full to bursting with history and culture… if this pretty much sums up your dream hols, then climb aboard cloud nine for a trip to Agriturismo Terrauzza sul Mare, a family-friendly site 20 minutes’ drive from the stunning Sicilian city of Syracuse. There’s a public bus service that runs directly from the site in to the city, so you’re all set up for days of exploring without the hassle of sorting parking. For ocean dips, a path leads right from the site down to the rocky bay, and if you're more of a mover than a snoozer, the start of the 10-kilometre coastal Magdalen Pathway is 10 minutes away. When you’re feeling ready for some eats, you can either get that barbecue started (grab the essentials in the supermarket less than five minutes away) or venture out to one of the many restaurants worth trying within half an hour of the site. Once you’ve eaten your fill, head back to base to relax in peace and quiet, basking in the aromas from the garden. Not quite done yet? If you're inspired by the spectacular pottery in this part of Sicily, you can bring some home with you – Renata, one half of the duo that runs Terreuzza sul Mare, runs an artistic ceramic workshop from the site and will organise classes on request for the decoration of terracotta objects.

Local attractions

Starting your hols with a day trip into Syracuse is an absolute must. Make immediate tracks for the old town on Ortigia island for museums, galleries, temples and palaces, dig through the past at the Roman Ruins and Neapolis Archaeological Park, then step back into the present for a crisp glass of vino at Azienda Agricola Pupillo. If that doesn’t fill your spectacular-city quota, Terreuzza sul Mare is also within easy reach of Noto (40 minutes' drive) where you can explore Palazzio Ducezio, Palazzio Nicolaci and the cathedral, then zoom over to Sicilia in Vespa to book yourself onto a Vespa tour of the island – how better to see part of Italy than on one of its most famed creations...? Fancy stretching your legs? Get out in nature with jaunts to Vendicari and Cavagrande del Cassibile nature reserves, both around 45 minutes away, then make the longer trek to Mt Etna, an hour and 45 minutes away, for hiking and driving tours of the famed volcano. Kids in tow? Head straight for Etnaland, just over an hour from Terrauzza sul Mare, for a waterpark, theme park, dinosaur park and laser show all wrapped into one.
