  • Small hilltop site three kilometres from the historic centre of Noto
  • Noto Cathedral 10 minutes’ drive; Lido di Noto beach 20 minutes
  • Swimming pool; bar; picnic area; communal barbecues; breakfast service
A leafy hillside hideaway shaded by olive trees yet only five minutes’ drive from Sicily’s spectacular baroque city of Noto may seem too good to be true, but that’s exactly what you’ll get when you sign up for a stay at Camping Villaggio La Collinetta. There’s more too, for a break at this spacious, peaceful family site also puts you near sandy east-coast beaches, and other ancient sites like the hillside Necropolis of Castelluccio (half an hour’s drive) or the remains of the aeons-old Greek city of Eloro (20 minutes). So that’s your sightseeing agenda all sorted then. But never fear, there’s plenty to keep you occupied at home base. On days when you do decide to hang out at the site, you can while away the hours soaking up the sun, have a dip in the pool, and admire valley or hill views from the sundeck – over a glass of something chilled from the bar of course. Later on, grill up a feast for the kids at the shared barbecue zone, and eat it on the picnic terrace with a backdrop of the same stunning views. Order breakfast for the following morning from the bar. Repeat as often as necessary. You’ll get the hang of it in the end.

From the manager: Ci fa molto piacere che vi siate trovati bene.

Local attractions

First stop on your sightseeing schedule may well be the UNESCO-listed city of Noto (five minutes’ drive) for its sublime baroque architecture – mostly all rebuilt following an earthquake in 1693. A whistle-stop tour could include the ornate Noto Cathedral, topped with domes and with a dazzling, plain-white interior, the Palazzo Ducezio and its lavish Hall of Mirrors, and Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata. After all that, you’ll need an espresso in one of Corso Vittorio Emanuele’s many terrace bars. Ancient remains come thick and fast in this region of Sicily: the prehistoric Necropolis of Castelluccio (half an hour’s drive) is carved into a hillside, and there are 10,000-year-old Greek remains at hilltop Eloro (20 minutes). Don’t forget the Roman ruins at Noto Antica (20 minutes), or neglect the fantastical mosaics in Villa Romana del Tellaro (20 minutes). If the kids start rebelling after all these cultural visits, why not treat them to a day on the sandy beach at Lido di Noto (20 minutes), or go wild swimming under waterfalls in Riserva Naturale Cavagrande del Cassibile (25 minutes)?
