  • Peaceful site in a large wood on the banks of Lake Bolsena
  • Next to a beach and close to watersports and walking trails
  • Sports pitch, playground and bar-restaurant with shaded terrace
A 10-hectare wood, the fifth largest lake in Italy and 300 metres of sandy beach – what a location this is. Peaceful Camping Valdisole is on the banks of Lake Bolsena, with walks, horse riding, watersports and historic estate visits all nearby, and plenty of comfy hammocks, shaded lawns and that beach catering for those seeking rather less energetic ways to pass their days. Owners Luigi and Fabiana are big fans of the permaculture movement and so have chosen to keep their place as natural as possible to ensure the facilities have minimal impact. There’s a large open space to run about and play games of football or volleyball, a playground and plenty of scope for woodland walks or games in among the forest of native trees. Seeking refreshment? Stroll over to the sbar-restaurant where snacks, meals and drinks are served up either inside or out on the sunny/shaded terrace. Or take the DIY approach by picking up bits and bobs at the mini market and selecting a spot for a picnic: the lake beach might be a rather fine place for a snack and glass of something, perchance...?

Local attractions

There’s much to do nearby for active types: walkers can head out for leisurely lakeside strolls or stride out on longer routes such as the Via Francigena, once part of the pilgrims’ route from Canterbury to Rome, and guests also have easy access to horse riding and cycle routes. Lovely Lake Bolsena (the fifth largest in all the land) is a great place for watersports too – skim the surface with days spent sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing or head down into the depths on a scuba diving excursion to see the volcanic rocks up close. Pick up a local fishing licence and you can also try your luck landing the lake's trout, pike, perch and mullet. Away from the lake, it’s worth visiting some of the local towns, including Bolsena and its Renaissance paintings in the catacombs under the church, and Civita di Bagnoregio, accessed only by a hanging bridge. Gorgeous villas, estates and gardens dot the area too – try the gardens at Villa Lante or the Park of the Monsters in Bomarzo for gardens dotted with sculptures and surprises; both are less than an hour’s drive away.
