Time-travel back to medieval times with a visit to hilltop Collalto Sabino (20 minutes’ drive). Stroll cobbled streets lined by stone houses with wrought-iron balconies filled with flowers, check out the grand 17th-century castle, and see surrounding villages light up at sunset from the panoramic viewing platform at the top of the village. Go underground with a guided tour of subterranean chambers, stalactites and stalagmites at the Grotte di Val De Varri (half an hour), where you can also spot Bronze Age ceramics and flints.
