With a spectacular setting amid thousands of centuries-old olive trees, I Giardini di Margius is an adults-only site with stunning views over forested hills in the Province of Latina. At 15 minutes’ drive from the historic hill town of Itri, accommodation is in comfortable wooden bungalows with ensuite bathrooms and a simple layout that includes a TV, fridge, air conditioning, a hairdryer, sheets and towels.
Facilities around this verdant and neatly maintained site include shaded seating areas tucked into the olive groves, a swimming pool with far-reaching views over the hills, a hot tub and sauna. Breakfast – a feast of local produce and seasonal fruits – is included in the package, and you also have use of the outdoor kitchen and barbecue when you’re going down the self-catering route. If that’s too much like hard work, you can book in at the on-site restaurant for dinner by prior reservation.
Washing and cleaning are included in the price of your stay; dogs are welcome at the site and there are numerous walks directly from the pitches for a stretch of the paws.

Local attractions
When a day on the beach beckons, choose between the golden sands of Spiaggia di Sperlonga (25 minutes’ drive) and Spiaggia di Serapo (35 minutes). Both are equipped with lido clubs offering food, watersports and sun loungers. If you’d like to explore a little further afield, take the hydrofoil from Formia (25 minutes) to the island of Ventotene (an hour and 15 minutes on the boat) and discover the Roman ruins at Villa Giulia.
There are more ancient remains at the Archaeological Park of the Villa of Tiberius and National Archaeological Museum Sperlonga (40 minutes) – Emperor Tiberius formerly dined in luxury in the vast and strangely symmetrical sea cave at the site.
There are more ancient attractions closer to base camp too, including a section of the Appian Way (25 minutes), where you can spot the remains of monumental marble tombs, rutted pavements and water cisterns. The Mausoleum of Cicero (20 minutes) is a vast stone monument and possible burial site of the renowned Roman orator and poet.
