- Peaceful family-friendly site a five-minute drive from Palinuro
- Velia Archaeological Park 55 minutes’ drive; Lovers’ Path an hour
- Less than a five-minute walk from the beach; dogs welcome on site
A five-minute drive from the seaside resort of Palinuro, on the Cilento coast of the Campania region, Regina Villaggio Camping welcomes families (and their dogs) to a peaceful setting dotted with leafy trees. One of the highlights of the site is its proximity to the sea, which is less than five minutes away on foot. Cue long summer days spent relaxing on sandy beaches, swimming, canoeing or paddleboarding in the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian.
Before you head to the beach, you might want to make a pit stop at the on-site food shop to gather the essentials for a lunchtime picnic; for anything else, there are a couple of supermarkets within a 10-minute drive. Of course, you might prefer to sample the gastronomic offerings of this southern Italian region in one of several seafront restaurants, where you can also linger – aperitivo in hand – as you watch the sun set over the water…
Those who long for more active pursuits can hire a bike from Palinuro and explore the coastline or the countryside inland on two wheels. Alternatively, head to the romantically named Sentiero degli Innamorati (Lovers’ Path; an hour’s drive), where a stepped trail takes you through dense Mediterranean vegetation to viewpoints with spectacular vistas over the sea. If you head south, you reach the Baia degli Infreschi (50 minutes), part of a marine reserve.

Local attractions
After exploring the town of Palinuro (five minutes’ drive), with its rugged rocky beaches, head to nearby Cape Palinuro, a vegetation-covered headland dotted with sea caves like the atmospheric Grotta Azzurra, which can be explored by boat. A hike to the lighthouse rewards with splendid views of the coastline (the lighthouse itself is out of bounds).
Velia Archaeological Park (55 minutes) was discovered by accident during the construction of the railway line in the 19th century. This former Greek colony was a thriving commercial and cultural centre. Remains of its heyday include an amphitheatre, a thermal complex and a sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady del Monte Sacro (an hour) sits atop Mount Gelbison and has gorgeous views of the Gulf of Salerno. Built around the turn of the first millennium, the sanctuary has long been a popular pilgrimage site and is renowned for religious apparitions.
