It's free, quick and easy!
- Wild camping with mountain and sea views in the Campania region
- Archaeological Park of Paestum 15 minutes’ drive; beaches 20 minutes
- A 10-minute walk from the town of Capaccio and its pizzerias
It's a frequent family holiday dilemma: one of you wants to go to the seaside and the other wants to visit amazing archaeological ruins. To make things more complicated, the kids all want to hit the waterparks. How are you going to keep everybody happy? Well, you might just be able to do that with a stay at Camping Rodigliano, a 10-minute walk from the town of Capaccio, in the southern Italian region of Campania. If you’re all up for a wild camping adventure too, that is.
Amenities are scant at this peaceful, dog-friendly site on almost six acres of land on a family-run farm – it’s worth noting that there are no toilets or showers here. However, what it does have in abundance is spectacular views of wooded mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The nearest sandy stretch is about 20 minutes’ drive away, so it’s close enough to keep sun-worshippers happy. Meanwhile, a 15-minute drive takes you to one of Italy’s heaviest hitters when it comes to ancient ruins: the Archaeological Park of Paestum, which includes both Greek and Roman temples, plus an amphitheatre and a museum with items excavated in the area.
If you want to throw a little hiking into the holiday equation too, there are plenty of options. Trails through olive groves and dense forest lead to centuries-old churches and ruined castles, or to rocky gorges and waterfalls like Cascata Solofrone (five minutes’ drive or a 45-minute hike). For spectacular sunsets, head to the Terrazza del Cilento observation deck (15 minutes), with views across the valley below and the coastline.
Barbecues are allowed on site, and there are small supermarkets and delis in nearby Capaccio, alongside pizzerias and restaurants.

Local attractions
The UNESCO-listed Archaeological Park of Paestum (15 minutes’ drive) really must be on your schedule, whether you’re a keen historian or just have a passing interest in the past. The Doric temples here are among the best preserved anywhere in the world, and you’ll get a real sense of what the place was once like when you stroll along the Via Sacra and wander through the remains of public buildings.
For natural wanders and wildlife spotting instead, head to the nature reserves of Oasi Vivinatura Lagosele (half an hour) and WWF Persano (45 minutes). There’s some gorgeously green clear to swim or canoe through after a walk through the limestone gorge at Gole del Calore (an hour), and a lovely chance to keep cool with an underground karst cave tour at Grotte di Castelcivita (40 minutes).
And those waterparks? There are slides and pools galore at both Aquafarm (35 minutes) and Isola Verde Acqua Park (40 minutes).
