- Landscaped and forest site overlooking the Hunsrück heights
- Next to the Schinderhannes bike path between Emmelshausen and Simmern
- Sloping grounds and generously-sized, shaded pitches
A splendid location, scenic setting and loads to do in the surrounding region are the first things to tick off your checklist if you're pitching up at Campingplatz am Mühlenteich, a green and peaceful forest place with lush views of the Hunsrück heights.
Mühlenteich is a prettily landscaped site, on the edge of a fragrant pine and spruce forest within easy walking distance of the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis town of Lingerhahn. Hiking trails, mushroom and berry picking, foraging in the woods, and wildlife watching in and around the forest are all top picks in the region, along with cycling the Schinderhannes bike path between Emmelshausen and Simmern, which runs next to the site.
The central feature of Campingplatz am Mühlenteich is its big natural pond for swimming in summer and skating in winter, surrounded by plenty of green space for sunbathing and overall idling. Around the site, you could amble around to find your own quiet spot (this place is so peaceful it even has its own chapel), or let the kids loose at the outdoor and indoor play areas before challenging them to a game of pétanque.
A restaurant serving German classics like wurst and schnitzel is on hand to assist you with ensuring the family is fed and watered; after your dins, linger around in the beer garden for a bit to take in one of the regular events.
The site also has a barbecue area and gas cylinder sales. Campfires are allowed.

Local attractions
Campingplatz am Mühlenteich is in prime position for exploring the Rhine valley, or for using it as base to dive into the activities and festivals of the region in all seasons.
Mines and museum are within day trip distance if you want to check out the history and the industrial heritage of the region: try the Schiefergrube Herrenberg slate quarry or the Schmittenstollen, the only mercury mine in western Europe, both just under an hour away, and the aviation, steam engine and fire brigade museum in Hermeskeil, about an hour and 10 minutes' drive from the site.
Other options include sightseeing days in the region's historic cities such as Herrstein, Koblenz, Boppard, Oberwesel, St. Goar, Bingen, Simmern, Kastellaun, Kirn, Trier and Mainz; tripping around the castles along the Rhine and Moselle rivers; and taking the educational forest and nature trails in Emmelshausen and Tiefenbach. If you're up for some scenic cycling, access the Schinderhannes cycle route next to the site, for a 38-kilometre run along the area's old railway line.
