Sometimes the best things come in the smallest packages – Lower Saxony site Mobilheime und Kanuverleih Ems-Hase may be modest in scale, but guests staying here can expect plenty of peace and quiet, with a fine and dandy forest location to seal the deal. Those seeking watery adventures need not venture far: with on-site canoe hire, exploring the many waterways that crisscross the surrounding countryside is a cinch. The mighty river Ems (fully 362 km long) is but one kilometre away from base and a canoe shuttle service is on hand to help you get there. Cyclists are also well catered for hereabouts, and the Ems-Hase region is home to plenty of safe, well-maintained bike routes. Head into Meppen (15 minutes' drive) to get your bearings if you fancy exploring the area on two wheels: the town has a number of circular cycle trails and a handful of shops where bikes can be hired. This is a family-friendly spot indeed, with a play area on hand for the kids to let off steam, and plenty of space to set up barbecues for an outdoor sizzle. Supplies can be picked up in Groß Hesepe (five minutes' drive), where amenities include a supermarket and bakery.

Local attractions

For outdoorsy times, head to Gesste reservoir (15 minutes' drive) for open-air swimming and beach volleyball in pleasant green surrounds. A little further afield, the nature reserve at Tinner Dose-Sprakeler Heide (30 minutes) has almost 4000 hectares of outdoor habitats to explore. Local towns of note include Meppen (15 minutes), whose old town square and gothic church deserve a visit. Lingen (25 minutes) is a similarly lovely spot to linger in, with riverside walks and sites of historic interest including an old Jewish cemetery. For more history, check out the seafaring specimens on display at the local maritime museum (20 minutes). For a kid-pleasing jaunt, try Ferienpark Schloß Dankern (20 minutes), a theme park with jumbo-sized slides, rollercoasters and a sailing lake, or head off to meet the creatures at Wildgehege Haselünne zoo (30 minutes). Münster, an hour and a quarter to the south east of the site, is a smashing provincial city that's too often overlooked. Highlights here include the cathedral, botanical gardens, art galleries and elegant Erbdrostenhof Palace.
