Set in the peaceful countryside of Heiligenberg Nature Reserve, Bruchmühlen is a historic estate with just a clutch of fully serviced pitches on the banks of a millpond. It’s five minutes’ drive from Bruchhausen-Vilsen in Lower Saxony, where there are shops, cafés and restaurants. This place has one very unusual USP. At the centre of the property lies a monumental (and still operational) medieval grain watermill where guests can watch milling demonstrations, learn to mill their own flour or cheat by buying it ready-made from the on-site shop. Staying here supports the local community, as the site is operated by the Bruchmühlen Mill Association (part of the Heiligenberg Heritage Association). In an annex to the mill, there are facilities including a shower, toilet and water tap. A shared kitchen has everything you need to conjure up simple camping meals, and there’s a laundry room to take care of your chores. Barbecues and firepits are on hand for anyone going self-catering, and there is a communal chillout den on the banks of the mill pond – handy for after dark on clear nights, when you’ll catch sight of millions of stars twinkling in the night skies. Breakfast is offered for an additional fee, and you can hire electric bikes to explore the nature reserve. If you have dogs that need exercising, you should be able to find loads of walks nearby too.

A charming, rustic site by a millpond with welcoming, eco-aware hosts. Mostly hassle-free stays, though caravan space can be tight and showers are a bit tired. Toilets are fine, but dishwashing facilities could be better.

Liked The scenery is stunning, very peaceful location with a very close swimming pool/outside park area which was perfect.

Disliked We feel this site should be advertised as adult only. We were made to feel very unwelcome with our 6 month old baby on the first night. Our baby woke up after 1 hour asleep and cried, for roughly 10-15 minutes while we tried to get her back to sleep. She went back to sleep but woke up again after 5 minutes and cried for a further 5/10 minutes while she was resettled. During this 5 minutes the host came over and said “if the baby continue crying you move to the other side of the pond” she told us it wasn’t fair on our neighbours (who were not at the site) and that they wanted to relax. Bea gave the impression they had complained. I advised it was a lot of work to move so we would think about it for the following day but that right now we needed to get our baby to bed.
Our neighbours came back and the following morning told us not only had they not complained but Bea had told them on their return “the baby cried for an hour”. This is caterogically not what happened. Our neighbours didn’t hear our baby our whole trip.

Bea apologised for mentioning it, however we already felt very on edge if our baby made any noise at all and felt it was odd she moaned to our neighbours about us. We realised it was Bea who had been unhappy with the crying as she had been sat on her balcony with a friend at the time.

I would advise not booking if you have young children who ever cry!

From the manager: Yes, our little campsite really does have a stunning scenery and is a very peaceful location.
People come here for peace and relaxation. Although the pitches are very very spacious, if you nevertheless choose to park your caravan right next to others’, you should bear in mind that they too want to enjoy the peace of a quiet location. Happily we have a lot of other pitches. So you could have created of lot of place between the different caravans.

Liked Der Platz war super,und hatte tolle Plätze zum aufbauen . Die Toilette war in Ordnung.
Die Dusche eher in die Jahre gekommen,war nun leider nichts für mich .
Der Apfelkorb mega lieb von Bea.

Liked A rustic campsite in a beautiful location overlooking the millpond. The host is very friendly and is knowledgeable on her working mill and the surrounding area and is keen to maintain the sites unspoiled beauty.

Disliked There is limited room to manoeuvre a car and caravan.

Local attractions

The number-one visitor destination in these parts is probably the Museums-Eisenbahn Bruchhausen-Vilsen (five minutes’ drive), a train museum with numerous functioning steam engines, carriages and a short ride onboard a heritage train to Asendorf. If you’re after entertainment for the family, try Paintfreakz (10 minutes) for a spot of wildly competitive paintballing, or visit the peacocks, parrots and porcupines at the Tierpark Petermoor (20 minutes), where there’s also a petting farm for younger visitors. Now’s your chance if you’ve always wanted to walk with wolves and feed them; you can do just that at Wolfcenter GbR (25 minutes), where you can also watch birds of prey in flight displays. To get out and about in nature, Heiligenberg Nature Reserve (accessed from the site) has numerous waterside or woodland walks and cycle trails. For longer excursions, you can pedal it to the Hoya-Sulingen Geodätischer Punkt – the midpoint of Lower Saxony – in around half an hour by bike.
