  • Pop-up luxury site in peaceful Munich park for Oktoberfest
  • A 20-minute drive from city centre and festival grounds
  • Hot breakfasts, unlimited hot drinks; access to after-parties
Ah, Oktoberfest. Of all the big shindigs on the globetrotters' and backpackers' to-do lists, Munich's fortnight of beer-related festivities must surely be the biggest and the booziest of the lot. Oktoberfest at Campingplatz Obermenzing provides pop-up accommodation of the comfiest kind in a peaceful park that’s sufficiently distant from the oompah bands and the foaming steins of the bierfest yet reachable in a 20-minute ride. In Munich, the beer comes stronger and in bigger glasses, and much the same applies to your accommodation: roomy and bright, big enough to stand up in (or swing a stein in…) with comfy double beds, duvets and hot water bottles, bedside tables, power points and lighting. A berth at this most luxurious of Oktoberfest overnighting options also entitles you to unlimited quantities of tea, coffee, hot soup and hot chocolate, as well as a hot breakfast in the mornings. And at the end of the day, as the fairground rides of the festival start slowing down and the fräuleins in the dirndl dresses are calling Last Orders, the action’s only just warming up back at base, with after-parties featuring live music, DJs, barbecues, sangria and… more beer.

Local attractions

It would be wrong to suggest anyone could ever have too much Bavarian beer, too many sausages, sing too many drinking songs arm-in-arm at too many trestle tables, in between spinning round too fast on too many fairground rides, but... If you do feel like a short break from the beer swigging celebrations in the city centre, there are other sources of amusement nearby. After the manmade mayhem of the festival, there’s something very peaceful about the pelicans and the polar bears in the Hellabrun zoo, placidly plodding about their lives without a litre-stein in sight, and you get the same effect, on a grander scale, among the free-roaming bears, lynxes, deer and wolves at Wildpark Poing, 40 minutes’ drive away. It might be a touch nippy for swimming (it doesn’t mix with beer, either), but half an hour away, the Sternberger See is a serene location for head-clearing lakeside walks, runs and bike rides or relaxing cruises on the water. Back in town, try refreshing the parts that beers can’t reach with tours of the city’s renowned Egyptology and technology museums, wanders of the grand 18th-century Nymphberg castle or 4D thrills, stunt shows and cinematic history at Bavaria Filmstadt.
