On the outskirts of the village of the same name, Camping de Thoissey - Val de Saône sits where the Chalaronne river flows into the Saône, in the eastern department of Ain. The vineyards of the Beaujolais region (15 minutes’ drive) extend just across the Saône and are excellent destinations for interesting (wine-soaked) excursions. Hold that thought. Before driving (or cycling) through the French countryside looking for wineries and cellars, take some time to discover where you’ll be staying. Shaded by tall trees, the site has plenty to keep the entire family entertained, including a play area. For water-based activities, make your way to the marina on the river, where you can arrange a boat tour or a fishing expedition. The calm waters of the Chalaronne are popular with paddleboarders and kayakers, or you can have a go at wakeboarding and waterskiing at Totem Wake Park (20 minutes). After a meal at the on-site restaurant (which serves burgers, pizzas and other classics), you can relax with a drink at the riverside tables, watching a game of pétanque and catching the sunset before heading back to your accommodation to get ready for an evening of organised entertainment. In addition to several restaurants and cafés, Thoissey village has a bakery and a grocery store for your provisions (should you want to do your own cooking or decide to have a barbecue). The site is also next to a public swimming pool (open in July and August only).

Fantastic riverside spot with spacious, flat pitches & friendly staff. Great food (try the mussels!) & clean loos. Some guests extended stays for the good vibes & pool. Downsides: site upkeep, litter, untidy areas, some faulty facilities & power issues. Pool isn't on-site.

Liked Close to the river and we was able to launch our own kayak and enjoy the river.
Pitches were reasonably flat and large.

Disliked Restaurant food was overpriced for the poor quality that it was.
This is not coming from someone who eats in fancy restaurants so the opinion is a fair comment.

Liked The whole site! Cleanliness, friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff. Being near to the river. Good amenities and on site entertainment. Excellent facilities. Would highly recommend. We were staying for a night halt but decided to stay on for two days.

Liked Lovely large, flat pitches, easy to get to. Sophie easy to get contact due to late arrival. Very helpful and great communication.
Lovely location on the river. Good location for driving south and 1 night stop off.

Disliked Site had an untidy feel about it. There were old caravans that had obvious been there for a while, grass growing around them. Feeling of abandonment. Some electric sockets worked some didn’t, moved ours about to get it working.
Toilets unisex, not a problem but toilets did not smell nice. Some smelled of urine. 😟 Showers worked ok. Quick stopover for us which was enough.

Big cats, giraffes and lemurs are among the residents at Touroparc Zoo (10 minutes), which stretches over 12 luxuriant hectares. There are also attractions for children, especially younger ones, with a traditional carousel and a miniature train. Meanwhile, adventurous kids can go on a tree-climbing course. Wine lovers should head to Hameau Duboeuf (10 minutes), a theme park with a distinct vinous focus. Interactive exhibits (such as a flight over the vineyards of Beaujolais) illustrate the local viticultural heritage, and you can also visit a cellar with oak and stainless-steel vats – before the inevitable tasting session.
