It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site on the banks of the Sevron river
- Spectacular Royal Monastery of Brou within 15 minutes
- Bike rental, fishing, trampoline and kids’ play area
Paddle over to Camping du Sevron, a family-friendly site on the outskirts of Saint-Étienne-du-Bois and 15 minutes’ drive from the town of Bourg-en-Bresse in the L’Ain department of Rhône-Alpes.
On the banks of the Sevron, this is a top site for anyone angling for some quiet fishing time: get a licence, bag a piece of riverbank, cast out a line and pass a day (or two) in peaceful contemplation waiting for bass or trout to bite. Kids can be kept out from under foot by a dismissal to the giant trampoline or by renting a pedal kart for hair-raising circuits of the site.
Haul in a lucky catch and that’s dinner sorted: barbecues are allowed on site, so fire one up and let appetites build as the smell of grilled fish fills the air. Once hunger is satisfied, any leftovers can go to canine pals who’ve come along for hols – all members of the family are welcome here.
Not much of an angler? Never fear, there’s much more to do round here. Hire a bike on site for two-wheeled explores of the river valley, wander across the road to the Maison de Pays en Bresse ecomuseum to learn all about the area’s rural heritage, or opt for some treetop adventures at the accrobranche in the village.

Local attractions
Think of France and think of châteaux – it should come as no surprise that there are plenty hereabouts to explore. Within less than an hour’s drive of base, tours of Corcelles, Rosy and Loriol (and dungeon) come highly recommended, as does a stop at Château de Fleyriat, just 15 minutes away.
There are more stunning piles of bricks nearby if castles don’t appeal: the reconstructed La Popye des Fées de Buellas is a must for anyone who wants a glimpse into the distant Bressan past, the spectacular 14th-century Royal Monastery of Brou (France's favourite monument) is worth the 15-minute drive, and Cluny Abbey should entice with stories of its influence through the ages.
For days less full of serious thought, head to the Seillon forest to follow trails among the trees, explore on bike or horseback, take lots of photos and wander along the greenway to the Parcs Loisirs de Bouvent, where the family can learn how to sail, have a go at windsurfing, get competitive with some beach volleyball, or take a dip in the lake.
If that’s got kids begging for more watery entertainment, an hour’s car journey will bring the family to the waterpark in Trévoux – otherwise stick to dry land with an animal-filled stop at Touroparc Zoo or an underworld explore at the prehistoric cave system of Cerdon.
