  • Peaceful site on slopes of Mt Ruy in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region
  • Pool and café on site; fresh bread and pastries delivered daily
  • Walk GR routes from the site; trek the Saou forest on horseback
The landscape in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region is not so much dramatic as quietly seductive… and staying in a spot called Camping Le Matin Calme (Quiet Morning) you'll get a sense of that all day long. The wooded slopes of Mount Ruy rise up just past the swimming pool, and during the day you might spot brightly coloured paragliders sailing sedately off the peak. With a view like that you might never want to leave the pool. If and when you do, you'll appreciate the washrooms with showers and the shared washing-up area… better still, forget the washing up and eat out at the on-site café bar: it's in a fine spot, on a shady terrace looking onto the pool. When you wake up to experience those quiet and restful mornings, remember you don't have to go far for warm fresh bread and pastries: they're delivered daily. Vesc is a pretty green village with a couple of welcoming eateries and a farm where they proudly show visitors how they make the local Picodon goats' cheese. If you should need anything more than cheese, the town of Dieulefit is 15 minutes by car.

Local attractions

Green hills dotted with peaceful villages and sunflowers, olive groves and purple lavender: this part of France, the Provençal Drôme, invites you to wander. If you're determined to see it all, the 100-kilometre Tour du Pays de Dieulefit-Bourdeaux walk pretty much does it (lesser mortals can sample some short, but often stunning sections): join the path in Vesc and head over Mt Ruy to Montjoux. Montjoux (10 minutes' drive) is really three hilltop hamlets where potters and other artisans ply their trade by the rain-fed Lez river; your car boot may come back creaking with treasures. But don't contemplate driving through Le Poët-Laval (20 minutes); no car could fit down the tiny alleys of this ancient town. Its medieval castle peers down on lavender fields which on hot days really do give off a purple haze. For something more active than wandering, hire bikes in Dieulefit and head down the dozen local trails. Set sail from Saillans (45 minutes) for kayaking antics down the Drôme river or saddle up for horse trekking through the Saou forest at Mornans (20 minutes). And if you're not content with gazing at the paragliders from the pool, head to Dieulefit and join a jump.
