  • Quiet family site on the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Rhône in the Drôme
  • Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche 40 minutes’ drive, Le Pont d’Arc 50 minutes
  • Municipal swimming pool next door; shops and cafés five minutes’ walk
If you’re searching for somewhere quiet and family-friendly to lay your head in the gorgeous Drôme, Camping La Graveline on the outskirts of Châteauneuf-du-Rhône should fit the bill nicely. The site is really easy to access if you’re travelling by car – the A7 motorway is five minutes’ drive away. Best of all, it’s roughly 300 metres off the long-distance ViaRhôna cycle route, which will eventually connect Geneva with the beaches of the Camargue; cyclists are catered for with bike-storage facilities and the whole site is under 24-hour video surveillance for your security. If you’ve got active kids looking for a distraction, it’s handy that site guests get reduced admission to the municipal swimming pool (right next door) and there’s a small playground that’s free to use in the local park. This budget site – where dogs and groups are both welcome by the way – offers partially shaded pitches along with a simple loo and shower block. It’s not a problem if you run out of anything important, as there’s a small supermarket five minutes’ walk away, as well as a few cafés and pizzerias within about the same distance.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked Restaurant on site and friendly staff

Disliked Site is quite steep in places so we elected to use one of the pitches on the lower level. Ground was quite rough and the toilets were closed I guess due to lack of footfall. The nearest showers / toilets were quite a hike away which was not good.

From the manager: Bonjour merci pour votre retour en effet seul deux sanitaires sur 3 sont actuellement ouvert vu le passage actuel , il y avait un bloc douche et wc juste en face de votre emplacement numéro 33 , si j'ai oublié de vous le stipulé veuillez m'en excuser . Bonne route soyez prudent. Mr martinez directeur général

Local attractions

Active souls can get up to all sorts of adventures on the Ardèche River, from canoeing and rafting to wild swimming. You can also picnic on the beach at Le Pont d’Arc (50 minutes’ drive) as you admire the spectacular limestone arch that soars over the river. There’s more sporty fun to be had on the zipwires at Accrobranche Indy Parc (also 50 minutes), or the via ferrata climbing courses at Accrobranche Adventure Camp (an hour). Travel way back in time to see the carefully replicated cave paintings at Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (40 minutes), where there are also dioramas of woolly mammoths and Stone Age settlements. There’s a vast subterranean system at Aven d’Orgnac (50 minutes), where you can tour caves liberally adorned with stalactites and stalagmites as well as visiting a museum full of prehistoric fossils and bones. Coming right up to date, the reptiles at The Crocodile Farm (20 minutes) are very much alive, and you can walk (safely) among them in a vast tropical greenhouse or watch the crocs and tortoises being fed.
