  • Cirque de Gaud and Pont d'Arc within a 20-minute drive
  • Bar-restaurant, pétanque and heated pool on site
If simply reading the word 'Ardèche' gets you conjuring up images of pristine rivers, dramatic cliffs and gorgeous gorges, you may well find the setting of Camping La Residence d’Été rather to your liking. The reason? A setting on the edge of the village of Saint-Remèze puts this family-friendly site a mere 20-minute drive away from one of the prettiest parts of the Ardèche river, for scenic days out around the Gorges de l’Ardeche, Pont d’Arc and Cirque de Gaud. (And if you've yet to be acquainted with this most handsome of French regions, have a look at the site pics for a bit of a taster.) When you're not gallivanting through gorges, Camping La Residence d'Été is a top spot in which to unwind away from the crowds. This is a site that’s equipped with all the classic features of a French holiday park: a heated pool for open-air swims, a bar-restaurant with a terrace for sipping cool beers, a pétanque court for leisurely underarm throws… plus play areas, sports pitches and a trampoline for the kids and plenty of daytime activities and evening entertainment for all ages throughout the summer. That handy village location means that the site is just a few minutes' walk from goings-on in Saint-Remèze, where there's a bakery, a church, a bar and a handful of restaurants. The site has a small food shop where you can nab a few basics for your self-catered suppers, and in July and August a bigger farmers' market is held in the village square (Tuesdays and Sundays).

Local attractions

Where better to start than right there at the park? Throughout the summer site staff sort canoe outings and trips to a local tree-climbing park; have a chat when you’re there to see what’s on during your stay. Beyond that, there’s plenty of scope for more activity in the local area with days of hiking, horse riding, climbing, canyoning and via ferrata climbing trails. The area’s most visited feature is the pretty Pont d’Arc (20 minutes’ drive), which can be viewed from the water on a canoe outing or from dry land on a hike. Once you’ve seen that, seek out some of the other scenic spots around, like the Cirque de Gaud, the Chanet standing stones and the colourful Grotte de Saint Marcel: all are about 15 minutes’ drive away. Not all Ardèche attractions are natural, of course – you may also like to put on your list a wander around the cathedral, Roman sites and painted houses of Orange (50 minutes) and the medieval castle in Vogüé (40 minutes). La Ferme aux Crocodiles (20 minutes) is a good alternative if the kids aren’t into all this history.
