Spectacular Ardèche scenery, s'il vous plait? Oui, oui and another enthused oui to stays at Camping Les Rives de l'Ardèche, splendidly set on the banks of the Ardèche river.
Many of the (spacious, green) pitches here are right by the riverbank; if that's not your thing, more are roomily set among the trees of this peaceful and well-appointed site where there's loads of space too to run around or roam. As it's by the river, swimming and fishing are top picks here, along with canoeing, kayaking and gentle river ambles (one additional word: picnic). Around the site, head off for hiking in the woods, go rock and via ferrata climbing, or walk the nearby trails and forage for plump local mushrooms.
Les Rives de l'Ardèche is a few minutes' drive from its local town of Mayres, about 30 kilometres or 40 minutes' drive from Aubenas in the Rhône valley. The Monts d'Ardèche Natural Regional Park is within easy reach for heaps more outdoor days of climbing, paragliding, horse riding or traversing the plentiful hiking trails.
Back at your serene and scenic base, you can bag supplies including gas cylinders at the site shop to stagger back to pitch with for an evening over the barbecue tongs, or decide to take it easy and tuck into some tucker from the snack bar. Pick up fresh bread and croissants from reception on July and August mornings for a properly French feel to your petit-dejeuner.
Other facilities include a playground, a pétanque court and a TV room with books, ping pong tables and video games.

River fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and hiking in the woods are all available close by, along with angling for trout in the Drobie river within a short drive, and climbing, cycling and horse riding in the Monts d'Ardèche Natural Regional Park. Drive for about an hour and 15 minutes south to reach the world-famed stone arch of the Pont d'Arc for access to canoeing along the 24-kilometre length of river through the Gorges de l'Ardèche.
For châteaux and other historic piles in the region, take your history and heritage curiosity to Château de Ventadour, (25 minutes), the ruined castle on a rocky outcrop 323 metres up; the stylish buildings of Vogue (50 minutes) and Notre Dame des Neiges Abbey, within an hour. At Aubenas, 30 kilometres away, there's the famed 14th-century Château d'Aubenas, the Saint-Benoit Dome, the Cordeliers chapel and the Church of Saint Laurent. A few kilometres away are the traditional French towns of Vesseaux, Ucel and Saint-Privat.
After your day canoeing, hiking or climbing around the Ardèche gorges, go subterranean for a spell at spectacular Aven d'Orgnac, one of the biggest caves in the world and a Grand Site of France. Guided tours are available all year round and the Museum of Prehistory is also on the site.
