  • Near great cycle routes including the 26km ascent of Mont Ventoux
  • Swimming pool, paddling pool and snack bar with poolside terrace
Cyclists – up for a challenge? There’s a mighty one close to Camping du Défends, in the form of the ascent of Mont Ventoux, famed as one of the toughest of all the climbs on the Tour de France circuit. (If you fancy tackling it yourself, perhaps no need to mention to impressed friends that you took the nearest route, which just happens to be the easiest way up to the summit…) Not in the mood for such epic adventures? Fret not, there are many gentler ways to get out and about in the gorgeous Provençal countryside around here – leisurely bike or walking routes through the lavender fields, perhaps, paddling down the Sorgue river or pottering around the Vaucluse vineyards. Just outside the village of Sault, Camping du Défends is well placed for easy access to all these rural rambles as well as the village amenities (restaurants, shops and a supermarket are an easy walk/cycle/drive away). Time spent on site can be as active or relaxed as you require – play games of volleyball, pétanque or table tennis, dive into the outdoor pool or borrow books and board games for quieter times. The poolside snack bar’s a fab option, too – its terrace handily placed for multitasking the consumption of cool drinks while keeping an eye on pooltime proceedings.

Local attractions

Mont Ventoux’s the one the hardcore bike types flock here for – the ascent from Sault is a challenging 26-kilometre route, best tackled only by the fittest of the two-wheeled types. Those preferring more of a leisurely outing can follow one of the circular walking or bike routes from the village instead, taking in vineyards, forests, lavender fields and some fab views over Lac de Salettes or Nesque Canyon. Away from the trails, there’s also the option of paddling a canoe on the Sorgue river, an hour away, or taking to the treetops at the Ventoux Aventure park, half an hour away. Something calmer? Provence is most proud of its lavender, and several farms are open around the locale for visitors to wander the purple-hued fields and breathe in the gorgeous scents. Keen foodies may like to make a visit to the truffle museum in Monieux, 15 minutes away, to learn more about one of the area’s other prized products.
