It's free, quick and easy!
- Flower-filled and shaded site 30 minutes’ walk from Pampelonne beach
- A 10-minute drive to L'Escalet coastal walking trail and Saint-Tropez
- Kids’ club, snack bar, restaurant, pool, pétanque and aqua aerobics
Cracking coastal hols are to be had at Camping La Croix du Sud, a flower-filled and shaded spot half an hour’s walk from the fine white sands of Pampelonne’s long beach.
Set in the Var department, this park (with a swimming pool on site for dreamy dips) is also a 10-minute drive from the swanky French Riviera resort Saint-Tropez – head here to hobnob with the rich and famous – and is the same distance from L'Escalet with its well-known coastal walking trail.
But the big question is… How much time will you have to explore the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur surrounds when there’s so much going on at the site? The activity schedule here is extensive: shenanigans include everything from kids’ clubs (in July and August) for nippers over six years old to adults’ aqua aerobics sessions. Pétanque contests for sporty sorts are also organised, and fans of watery pursuits have access to paddleboards, catamarans, canoes and kayaks for hire down on Pampelonne beach.
Starting to feel peckish? A restaurant and snack bar at the park means there’s no need to traipse far for eats, but it’s worth venturing out anyway to meander around markets selling French fare as well as artisan-made crafts in places like Saint Tropez, Gassin (15 minutes' drive) and Sainte-Maxime (25 minutes).
A handful of shops and restaurants are in Ramatuelle (five minutes’ drive), an adorable village with hills to its back and a fab view of Pampelonne’s bay to its front.

Local attractions
Rove around the ramparts of Ramatuelle, looking out over the pink-tiled rooftops and narrow streets of the village (five minutes’ drive), or just head straight for the beach: the long and sandy Pampelonne beach (five minutes) has plenty of room for laying out a towel.
Fancy touring more of the traditional settlements in this area? Go to Gassin (15 minutes), a prettily positioned place set on a rock by the sea, and drop by some of the vineyards around the area, like Château Minuty and Domaine Tropez, for wine tasting.
Another town to totter along to is, of course, Saint-Tropez – slide over to the Citadel of Saint-Tropez Maritime History Museum to learn out about the region’s nautical history and amble around the harbour to seek out all the seriously swish yachts.
If you’re after family activities, glide towards the trio of Golden Islands for a boat trip, swing by Azur Park for the multiple amusements, or rush down the slides at Aqualand Sainte-Maxime (30 minutes).
