It's free, quick and easy!
- Quiet site with direct access to walks along a river and beach
- Less than 20 minutes’ drive from hikes in the Écrins National Park
- Miniature railway, heated pool, bowling alley, café and playground
Taken by trainspotting? Make tracks towards Camping Le Bocage in France’s Valgaudemar valley, a 1.3-hectare spot with a sizeable network of miniature railways for guests to have a gander at.
And even if you’re not one for pottering around platforms, the spectacular setting and leisure amenities of this site are sure to sway you into a stay. A heated swimming pool, playground and bowling alley are on hand for small sorts to bounce between, and a volleyball court, table tennis and café area for all ages are here as well.
Le Bocage is in the Hautes-Alpes, with direct access to the Séveraisse river for roaming along the banks, dips in the water and lazes on the river beach (basking should be simple, as this region gets more than 300 sunny days a year). And for those who want to adventure? Amble off on expeditions to Écrins National Park under a 20-minute drive away, an area packed with peaks reaching more than 3,000 metres high, or set off climbing, biking and horse riding nearby.
The nearest village to the park is Saint-Maurice-en-Valgodemard 20 minutes away on foot, where you can pick up breakfast croissants at the local bakery to take back to the picnic tables dotted around the grounds.

Local attractions
The Séveraisse river beach is right beside the site, with water shallow enough for kids to bask in. For deeper swimming spots to cool off in after tough treks, the Pétarel Lakes in Écrins National Park are a 10-minute drive (plus a bit of a hike through a silver fir forest).
More than 740 kilometres of marked paths crisscross the Hautes-Alpes, including shorter strolls suitable for small fry where the chance of sighting marmots will keep them focused on the jaunt. You can also see chamois, ibex and golden eagles in this region, along with 1,800 species of plants and flowers ranging from alpine orchids to Edelweiss.
Outside the national park walkers can wander past the Resurgence of Gillardes’ clear springs at the bottom of chalky cliffs. And if you simply want to sit in the car and arrive at stunning places? The Sautet Lake is your best bet and it also has a beach and small watersports centre from where you can kayak, standup paddleboard or hire a pedalo.
If it’s Saturday and you’re craving traditional French fare, make headway towards the Foire/Marché De Gap market – the biggest in the region – 45 minutes away to prep a picnic to eat at the beach.
