The team at peaceful Camping Saint James Les Pins in the Hautes-Alpes area reckon their scenic and well-placed site is a top option for those who want a relaxing break in a serene French setting – and with stacks to do both on site and nearby. Set in a Guillestre pine forest, Saint James Les Pins is between the valley of Queyras and the Massif des Écrins, the mountain range at the centre of the nearby and wildlife-filled Écrins National Park. A sandy beach for sunbathing is at the lushly green Eygliers Lake three kilometres away, and fishing, canoeing, sailing and water-skiing at Serre-Ponçon Lake, one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe and within 18 kilometres. This is also a top place if you want to sample trad French cuisine without going off site: try local specialities like tourte d’Aiguilles and Montbardon cheese at the Saint James restaurant, all accompanied (mais oui) with lashings of Châteauroux wine. Saint James has comfy and modern facilities, including modern toilet blocks with showers, a launderette and a washing-up corner. There's also a TV room, a library and a pétanque court.

Hiking, canoeing, rock climbing and mountaineering among spectacular landscapes are all easily accessible nearby in the popular French Alps setting of the Écrins National Park, the mountainous region where over 800,000 activity- and scenery-seekers flock each year. Another popular nearby option is Serre-Ponçon Lake, a vast expanse of 3,000 hectares scenically set among the mountains and with activities on water and land including fishing, swimming, sailing, hiking, horse riding, climbing and mountain biking. The village of Savines-le-Lac, about halfway round the lake on the southern side, is the place to go for boat tours, windsurfing, waterskiing and wakeboarding. Also famed in the region around Saint James Les Pins are the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mont-Dauphin Fort, built by the French military architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban – you'll want to bring a camera to snap the spectacular views from here – and the village of L'Argentière-la-Bessée on the edge of the Écrins National Park, to take an underground trip around its old silver mines at the Fournel Silver Mines and Mining Museum.

Disliked: Per un camping di questa grandezza, poche attività da fare (giusto una piccola area ricreazione) e poca possibilità di conoscere persone.

Liked: Beautiful location, peaceful, very clean modern toilets and showers.

Disliked: Small pitches, not easy to get touring caravan on. Restaurant not open on a Wednesday and unfortunately that is the night we stayed.

Liked: Wir hatten einen sehr schönen Urlaub auf dem Campingplatz Saint James Les Pins.
Den Kindern hat sowohl der Spielplatz, als auch der Badeteich sehr gut gefallen. Die Betreiber dort, sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit, auch wenn man der französischen Sprache nicht so mächtig ist.
Wir würden wieder dort hinfahren.

Disliked: Es war schade, dass einiges doch sehr in die Jahre gekommen ist. Teilweise keine Toilettensitze auf den WCs oder sie verrutschen. Das scheint aber in Frankreich recht üblich zu sein.
Die Wege zum Teich könnten etwas besser gepflegt werden, so dass man das Gestrüpp etwas zurückschneidet. Es ist sehr natürlich dort.

Liked: Everything! Relaxed. Helpful staff in tge restaurant & at reception. The views surrounding the site are beautiful. Lots of placed to walk. You could order fresh bread daily for collection the next morning. The natural swimming pool area is beautiful. A 2km walk along a marked path into Risoul is a nice break from relaxing under the trees at your motorhome. Showers are free & perfectly sufficient. We stayed 3 nights instead of 1. Loads of dantastic places to drive out to.

Liked: Superb location if you love walking, mountain biking, road riding, or motorcycling. Great little restaurant for the evening. Ten minutes walk to town. Friendly staff.
