It's free, quick and easy!
- Eco-friendly site in the lush surroundings of the Southern Alps
- A 20-minute walk from Barcelonnette via a river footpath
- Restaurant, wine bar, indoor lounge, TV, wifi and pétanque
Soak up the scenery in the sublime Southern Alps from Camping Le Tampico, set at the edges of Mercantour National Park.
This eco-friendly site is sandwiched in the lush Ubaye valley, with mighty mountains to conquer and a summertime restaurant so you can refuel with woodfired pizzas and grilled meats after hikes.
Regional wines are available to accompany your dins… or you can celebrate successfully cooking up your own culinary creations with a tipple at the dedicated wine bar. As a stellar way to kick off the next morning, breakfast’s best eaten on the patio at this eatery, while bread and pastries can be ordered to snack on at your own leisure (available in July and August).
You’ll need all that sustenance for tramping the local area: the site’s on the famed Route des Grandes Alpes and is surrounded by a whopping 1,000 kilometres of marked trails, 100 peaks and seven challenging cycling passes (including Bonette, Europe’s highest road).
If resting’s on your mind, the park's well set up for this: it has open areas to idle in as well as places under the boughs of willow and pine trees when guests want a break from the rays. When rain's predicted, take to the lounge to use the free wifi access or watch TV... when the clouds clear, it's time for a game of pétanque...

Local attractions
From the bottom of the site, Barcelonnette is a scenic 20-minute walk along the Ubaye river, an aquatic playground known for its rapids. You can raft and fish on the water or see it from a different angle by venturing on a paragliding trip high above the valley.
Back in Barcelonnette, this town of colourful architecture and a backdrop of huge mountain peaks experiences 300 sunshine days a year. In the summer months, it also feels like a fiesta happens every five minutes in the area, from the Festival des Enfants du Jazz in July to the Alpes Aventure Motofestival in early September.
For culture at any time, the town hosts the Museum of the Ubaye valley in a handsome villa, filled with curio curated from as far as Mexico and Japan. Alternatively, you can wander the streets, dipping in and out of the boutiques.
To stick with nature, mountains, waterfalls and gorges are plentiful in Mercantour National Park; to the north west of the area around 50 minutes away is Lac de Serre-Ponçon, one of the biggest lakes in western Europe with its bright blue glacial water.
